Tony-winning director Anna D. Shapiro<\/a> has been named the next Richard Rodgers<\/a> dean and director of Juilliard’s Drama Division.<\/p>\n

Shapiro, who\u00a0will lead Juilliard’s actor and playwright training programs,\u00a0will meet with students, faculty, and staff at the start of the new
\nacademic year in September. Following a period of transition, she\u00a0will
\nbegin her full-time tenure July 1, 2027.<\/p>\n

An
\n ensemble member and former artistic director of Steppenwolf Theatre
\nCompany, Shapiro won her Tony for her direction of the original Broadway production of\u00a0August: Osage County<\/a>. She was also Tony-nominated for her direction of\u00a0The Motherf**ker with the Hat. Her Broadway directing credits also include Eureka Day<\/a>, Of Mice and Men, Fish in the Dark<\/a>, The Minutes<\/a>, and This Is Our Youth<\/a>.\u00a0Shapiro has served on the
\n faculty of Northwestern University since 2002, where she leads the
\ngraduate directing program. She is a graduate of the Yale School of
\nDrama and Columbia College. Most recently, she directed Eric Bentley<\/a>‘s\u00a0Are You Now or Have You Ever Been at New York City Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nRichard Rodgers dean and director of Juilliard

\n peers, connected to the most vital creative work, and passionate about
\npreparing the next generation to lead with imagination and purpose.”<\/p>\n

Laura Linney<\/a>, a Juilliard
\n alum, member of the school’s Board of Trustees, and artistic advisor to
\n the Drama Division, added, “I am overjoyed to be welcoming Anna Shapiro as the next
\n Richard Rodgers dean and director of the Juilliard
\n Drama Division. Along with her astute intellect and articulate mind,
\nshe brings her remarkable talent as a theatre director as well as her
\nunderstanding of how to unite and collaborate with students and faculty
\nalike. The level of her professional and academic skill is rare indeed.
\nAnna\u2019s leadership and her infectious love of young artists and the arts
\nwill receive a warm and joyous welcome here at Juilliard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shapiro stated, “It is such an honor to join the incredible community of faculty, staff, and students at Juilliard.
\n To be asked to add my voice to the leadership of this storied American
\ninstitution, in a moment where the cultivation of our next major
\ncultural voices is so critical, is a responsibility I do not enter into
\nlightly. I am thrilled and humbled and ready. I cannot wait to begin.”<\/p>\n

Shapiro’s
\n appointment follows a comprehensive search led by President Woetzel and
\n Provost Adam Meyer. The process included broad participation from
\nfaculty, staff, students, alumni, and trustees.\u00a0<\/p>\n
