The July 28 official opening night of the Radio City Music Hall engagement of the\u00a0international touring production of Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/a>: The Arena Concert Spectacular\u00a0was a starry affair that included current and former stars joining forces at the conclusion of the musical. Attendees included producer Cameron Mackintosh<\/a>, co-creators Alain
\nBoublil and Claude-Michel Sch\u00f6nberg<\/a>, three-time Tony honoree Bernadette
\nPeters, director Richard Jay-Alexander<\/a>, Tony nominee Christopher
\nSieber, and more. The mix of former,
\ncurrent, and possibly future Fantines, Eponines, Javerts, and Jean
\nValjeans performed several Les Miz classics:\u00a0Patti LuPone<\/a> and Deborah Gibson<\/a> were part
\nof a group rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream”https:\/\/playbill.com\/”On My Own.”<\/a> Philip Quast and Jordan Donica<\/a>, among others, sang “Stars.”<\/a> Prospective Valjean (and former Enjolras) Aaron Tveit<\/a> and Alfie Boe<\/a> were joined by two former Valjeans for “Bring Him Home.”<\/a> A large group reprise of “One Day More”<\/a> concluded the evening.<\/p>\n

The New York run marks the
\nend of the two-year tour and the 40th anniversary celebrations of the
\ninternational hit musical. The limited engagement, which\u00a0began July 23,\u00a0continues through August 9.<\/p>\n

The company is led by Alfie Boe (La Boh\u00e8me<\/a>), Killian Donnelly (Kinky Boots<\/a>), and Ger\u00f3nimo Rauch (Les Mis\u00e9rables: The 25th Anniversary), who alternate in the role of Jean Valjean, with Bradley Jaden (Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends<\/a>) and Jeremy Secomb<\/a> (Evita) sharing the role of Javert. They are joined by Samantha Barks<\/a> (Pretty Woman: The Musical<\/a>, Les Mis\u00e9rables film adaptation) as Fantine, Matt Lucas (Les Mis\u00e9rables: The 25th Anniversary) as Th\u00e9nardier, Marina Prior (The Phantom of the Opera) as Madame Th\u00e9nardier, Jac Yarrow (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) as Marius, Beatrice Penny-Tour\u00e9 (The Book of Mormon) as Cosette, Shan Ako (Les Mis\u00e9rables 40th anniversary West End) as \u00c9ponine, Christian Mark Gibbs<\/a> (Camelot) as Enjolras, three-time Olivier
\nwinner Philip Quast as Bishop of Digne, and Rob Madge (My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?) as Bamatabois.<\/p>\n

The ensemble includes Kelly
\n Agbowu, Amelia Broadway, Mary-Jean Caldwell, Harry Chandler, Rosy
\nChurch, Gabrielle Cummins, Beth Curnock, Jade Davies, Jordan Lee Davies,
\n Jonathan David Dudley, Bryony Duncan, Harry Dunnett, Thiago Phillip
\nFelizardo, Charlie Geoghegan, Nic Greenshields, Christopher Key, Michael
\n Kholwadia, Andrew Maxwell, Jill Nalder, Lisa Peace, Emma Ralston,
\nCiaran Rodger, James Sillman, Geddy Stringer, Helen Walsh, Raymond
\nWalsh, Danny Whitehead, and Owain Williams. Cian Bhalla, Alfie Buck, and
\n Mateo Casado alternate in the role of Gavroche. Sharing the role of Little\u00a0Cosette are Lillian Alice Castner, Olive Ross-Kline, and Ella Tokita.<\/p>\n

These artists lead an onstage company of cast and orchestra members of over 65.<\/p>\n

The Cameron Mackintosh production is written by Alain Boublil<\/a> and
\nClaude-Michel Sch\u00f6nberg, based on the novel by Victor Hugo<\/a>. It has music
\n by Sch\u00f6nberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer<\/a>, original French text by
\nBoublil and Jean-Marc Natel, additional material by James Fenton<\/a>, and
\nadaptation by Trevor Nunn<\/a> and John Caird<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Orchestrations are by Stephen Metcalfe<\/a>, Christopher Jahnke<\/a>, and
\nStephen Brooker<\/a>, with original orchestrations by John Cameron<\/a>. The
\nproduction is directed by James Powell<\/a> and Jean-Pierre Van Der Spuy,
\ndesigned by Matt Kinley<\/a>, with costumes by Andreane Neofitou<\/a>, Christine
\nRowland, and Paul Wills, lighting by Paule Constable<\/a> and Warren Letton<\/a>,
\nsound by Mick Potter<\/a>, projections realized by Finn Ross<\/a>, and music
\nsupervision by Stephen Brooker and Alfonso Casado Trigo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Radio City engagement features Sphere Immersive Sound, comprised
\nof 7,000 speakers and next-generation 3D audio beamforming and wave
\nfield synthesis technology to transform how audio is delivered.<\/p>\n

Sound designer Potter stated, \u201cIt\u2019s been a great opportunity to recreate the sound design for Les
\nMis\u00e9rables: The Arena Concert Spectacular using the new Sphere
\nImmersive Sound System at Radio City Music Hall. Working with the team
\nallowed us to easily interface with the system and, once set up, to be
\nable to translate the performances of over 65 supremely talented cast
\nand orchestra into a fully immersive sonic experience\u2014with both the
\nmusic and sound effects coming alive with spatialization, and
\ncrystal-clear vocal intelligibility for every seat in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josephine Vaccarello, executive vice president, Live for MSG Entertainment, added, “Everyone knows the iconic music of Les Mis\u00e9rables,
\n and Radio City\u2019s groundbreaking immersive audio system\u2014Sphere
\nImmersive Sound\u2014brings this classic score to life in an entirely new
\nway. Sphere Immersive Sound has powered the live taps of the Rockettes
\nkickline and the orchestrations of 100 New York Philharmonic musicians,
\nand now amplifies the largest cast of ensemble singers for the Radio
\nCity system to date\u2014proving once again that there\u2019s nothing this system
\ncan\u2019t do.”<\/p>\n

The Arena Concert Spectacular was developed from the successful Les Mis\u00e9rables The Staged Concert,
\n which played over 200 record-breaking performances in the West End and
\nthe 25th Anniversary performance at The O2. It features a new design
\ncreated for larger venues.<\/p>\n

Mackintosh\u2019s production of Boublil and Sch\u00f6nberg\u2019s Les Mis\u00e9rables
\n also continues its record-breaking run at the Sondheim Theatre in
\nLondon\u2019s
\nWest End. The musical last played Broadway in 2016, and the London
\nproduction recently entered its 41st year at the Sondheim Theatre.<\/p>\n

The Arena Concert Spectacular is
\n produced by Mackintosh and Nick Grace Management. The Radio
\nCity Music Hall engagement is presented locally by The Bowery Presents.<\/p>\n
