NYPD Chief of Special Operations Wilson Aramboles traded his dream of teaching for a badge and a 38-year career with New York\u2019s Finest after a brutal neighborhood robbery hit too close to home.<\/p>\n
The 60 year old top cop \u2014 who immigrated from the Dominican Republic<\/a> at age 10 \u2014 was a City College student when his mother, Gladys Aramboles, was robbed in their neighborhood, Alphabet City.<\/p>\n \u201cMy mother was a victim of a crime,\u201d he recalled of the chain snatching. \u201cThat kind of changed me, and I wanted to give back to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n Wilson Aramboles, the NYPD\u2019s head of Special Operations, stands outside a tactical armored vehicle at his Floyd Bennett Field offices in Brooklyn on Thursday. Helayne Seidman for the NY Post<\/p>\n He grew up in the Lillian Wald Houses, a city housing project on Avenue D, and decided to go to college after graduating from high school.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a culture change,\u201d he said of relocating from his birthplace. \u201cI had to learn the language, the culture, coming in into a new country.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n He joined the NYPD in 1988<\/a> despite his mother\u2019s fears over the career switch, he said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was very rewarding,\u201d he said of becoming a cop. \u201cI had a goal in mind to help the community.\u201d<\/p>\n His mom eventually came around and was proud of him, he noted.<\/p>\n He started out in precincts in northern Manhattan and found that he could help people in need because he had a similar background.\u00a0<\/p>\n Aramboles, a Dominican immigrant, worked his way up through the ranks.. Helayne Seidman for the NY Post<\/p>\n He went on to became the Commanding Officer of the 33rd Precinct in Washington Heights. <\/p>\n From there, he moved on to Bronx Narcotics and was part of several large drug busts.<\/p>\n In one of his cases, the NYPD confiscated about nine kilos of cocaine, he recalled.<\/p>\n \u201cOne of my undercovers was shot in that case, which was a very emotional case because I was very close with the undercover,\u201d he said, adding that the cop survived and has retired.<\/p>\n Aramboles served in the NYPD\u2019s elite Emergency Services Unit during his career. Paul Martinka for NY Post<\/p>\n Aramboles went on to serve in several other units.<\/p>\n He now oversees the Emergency Service Unit<\/a> (ESU), Aviation<\/a>, Harbor, Mounted, and the Strategic Response Group.<\/p>\n He remembers being one of only five cops from the Dominican Republic working in the 33rd precinct \u2014 but today, 75% of the officers in the precinct are from the island.<\/p>\n Aramboles is proud of his Dominican heritage and plans to walk in the parade on Sunday. LP Media<\/p>\n \u201cI am proud of my Dominican heritage,\u201d he said. \u201cMy culture has taught me the importance of family, faith, humility and hard work.
