{"id":318233,"date":"2026-08-11T00:10:35","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T00:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/318233\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T00:10:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T00:10:35","slug":"pied-a-terre-tax-rollout-blocked-temporarily-by-judge-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/318233\/","title":{"rendered":"Pied-\u00e0-terre tax rollout blocked temporarily by judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s policy to tax luxury second homes in the city has been temporarily halted by a Staten Island judge, Richmond County <a href=\"https:\/\/iapps.courts.state.ny.us\/nyscef\/ViewDocument?docIndex=LQ8NoKrbIe5DHSpoTPvUPQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">court documents show.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tax, created to help close $500 million in the city\u2019s budget deficit, is to be implemented on second homes in the city worth more than $5 million.<\/p>\n<p>The decision comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2026\/08\/07\/lawsuit-filed-against-mamdani-administration-s-rollout-of-pied---terre-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a lawsuit was filed<\/a> by a group of city homeowners upset at having \u201cto be put through the burden and expense of having to apply for some exemption,\u201d Randy Mastro, the former first deputy mayor and lawyer representing the homeowners, said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement responding to the temporary restraining order, Matt Rauschenbach, a spokesperson for the mayor, said while the city disagreed with the ruling, \u201cwe are confident in both the pied-\u00e0-terre surcharge and the City\u2019s ability to implement it fairly and effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Law Department will appeal the ruling immediately which will stay the order, and the City will continue with the pied-a-terre\u2019s implementation,\u201d the statement goes on to read.<\/p>\n<p>Mastro released a statement of his own, saying he was \u201cvery gratified\u201d by the order and adding it \u201chas vindicated the rights of hundreds of thousands of New York City homeowners who were subjected to a process they never should have been a part of in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At an unrelated event Monday, Mamdani promised to \u201cvigorously defend\u201d the policy against the homeowners&#8217; lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>The next hearing is set for Aug. 31.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s policy to tax luxury second homes in the city has been temporarily halted by a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":318124,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[109,116,25,3281,4275,9,24,11,10,49,12,112,108,87,27,200],"class_list":["post-318233","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york","tag-app-local-state-politics","tag-app-ny-state-of-politics","tag-app-top-stories","tag-atlan-hassard","tag-local-politics","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-new-york-headlines","tag-new-york-news","tag-new-york-state","tag-news","tag-ny-state-of-politics","tag-ny-state-of-politics-blog","tag-politics","tag-top-stories","tag-vod"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/318233","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=318233"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/318233\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/318124"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=318233"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=318233"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=318233"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
