Hooray for Judge Wayne Ozzi for derailing Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s pied-\u00e0-terre tax<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Or at least the most outrageous part of the rollout, at least for now: In advance of an Aug. 31 hearing, the city has to take down its list of hundreds of thousands of names of homeowners who \u201cmight\u201d have to pay the class-war tax.<\/p>\n

Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul sold the levy as hitting only to non-residents who own ultra-expensive luxury homes that are usually empty \u2014 Russian oligarchs who park tens of millions of dollars on Billionaire\u2019s Row, or capitalists like Zoh\u2019s favorite target Ken Griffin.<\/a><\/p>\n

Yet the actual \u201cprove your innocence\u201d letters went to thousands of baffled full-time New Yorkers <\/a>whose modest homes are worth nowhere near the \u201c$5 million\u201d threshold that Mamdani keeps repeating, because Hochul\u2019s crack crew decided it should hit coops and condos starting at $1 million.<\/p>\n

You not only got told you had to figure out if you qualified for the tax, you had to file for an exemption post-haste if they wanted to avoid falling afoul of the Department of Finance.<\/p>\n

Worse: After DoF got it down to 17,000 possible targets, Mamdani\u2019s minions put out a database, publicly,\u00a0of hundreds of thousands<\/a> \u2014 with no possible good reason for issuing a hit list the city knew to be 95% incorrect.<\/p>\n

This mass doxxing can only be understood as Mao-style anti-landlord rabble-rousing, aiming to shame and scare the radicals\u2019 class enemies. <\/p>\n

It was a warning: The Movement \u2014 including Tracy Rosenthal<\/a>, the trust-fund baby who now leads an \u201cabolish rent\u201d campaign \u2014 has you in its sights, whether or not you qualify for this tax.<\/p>\n

Judge Ozzi\u2019s giving city lawyers a chance to explain otherwise, but it sure looks like all that \u201cequity\u201d noise doesn\u2019t mean just some dubious route to racial justice: They\u2019re also talking about your home equity, and they can\u2019t wait to get their hands on it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hooray for Judge Wayne Ozzi for derailing Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s pied-\u00e0-terre tax.
