{"id":318771,"date":"2026-08-11T17:16:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T17:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/318771\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T17:16:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T17:16:07","slug":"brooklyn-250-brings-revolutionary-war-history-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/318771\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooklyn 250 Brings Revolutionary War History to Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Historic Brooklyn sites are becoming classrooms this summer, offering free programs that commemorate the largest battle of the American Revolution. <\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn\u2019s Revolutionary War history will come to life this summer through <a href=\"https:\/\/theoldstonehouse.org\/revolutionary_brooklyn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn 250<\/a>, a series of free programs, tours, exhibitions and events at historic sites across the borough and online.<\/p>\n<p>The program marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn \u2014\u00a0the largest battle of the Revolutionary War\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and the founding of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn 250 is presented by the <a href=\"http:\/\/green-wood.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Green-Wood Cemetery<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/theoldstonehouse.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Old Stone House<\/a>, Brooklyn Public Library\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bklynlibrary.org\/center-for-brooklyn-history\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Brooklyn History<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prospectpark.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prospect Park Alliance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortgreenepark.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Greene Park Conservancy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortdefiance.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Friends of Fort Defiance<\/a>. The program is supported by $350,000 in state funding secured by state Sen. Andrew Gounardes and Assemblymembers Robert Carroll and Jo Anne Simon. Programs will continue through the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFew places in New York can tell the story of the American Revolution as directly as Brooklyn. Visitors can stand on Battle Hill, look across the landscape where the Battle of Brooklyn unfolded, and see where the defining moment in our nation\u2019s history took place,\u201d said Meera Joshi, president of the Green-Wood Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>The program highlights Brooklyn\u2019s role in the Revolutionary War, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ed85fafbf89949df903f31db73a5aa2b\/0\/d9dd5fa2cd22ab6b98d88d1f69ec63a3a4633c1d53328b652e3f2f322e72cf5d?cache_buster=1786046916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Battle of Brooklyn<\/a>. It explores the experiences of Black New Yorkers, Indigenous people, women and others whose stories have often been undervalued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Events include a Battle of Brooklyn reenactment in Prospect Park, walking and <a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/ed85fafbf89949df903f31db73a5aa2b\/1\/ff945166c07a45f32a7567fa935b1cf642fb2aba014e4a44e5b08b3d7bce94b2?cache_buster=1786046916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trolley tours<\/a>, concerts featuring reimagined Revolutionary-era music, educational programs and exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>The Green-Wood Cemetery will host a major commemoration on Aug. 23 with costumed interpreters, more than 50 regimental flags, historical objects, music and activities focused on the meaning of freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Prospect Park Alliance is also presenting exhibits and tours about the battlefield and the experiences of Africans enslaved by the Lefferts family.
