Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty in federal court in the case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killing, according to a report.\u00a0The New York Times reported the news Thursday, a day before Mangione is scheduled to make an appearance in Manhattan federal court.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK – Luigi Mangione<\/a> could be moving toward a guilty plea in the federal case over the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson \u2014 and a deal could have a major impact on what happens next.<\/p>\n

Mangione\u2019s lawyers and federal prosecutors are reportedly discussing a possible plea deal.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Mangione has pleaded not guilty, and no deal has been officially announced.<\/p>\n

TMZ founder Harvey Levin, a former attorney and law professor, says Mangione could enter an open guilty plea, leaving his sentence up to the judge.<\/p>\n

\u00a0“The feds are talking to Luigi\u2019s legal team about a plea,” Levin said, adding that it would “probably involve a guilty plea to murder.”<\/p>\n

A plea could allow Mangione to present mitigating circumstances and argue for less than life in prison.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New York criminal defense attorney James Kasouris said, “What this opens the door to is that Mr. Mangione could, in federal court, present mitigating circumstances in order to convince the judge to give him a sentence less than a life sentence.”<\/p>\n

A federal plea could also give Mangione\u2019s lawyers grounds to argue that New York\u2019s separate murder case should be blocked by double jeopardy. That is not guaranteed, however, and state prosecutors could fight to keep their case alive.<\/p>\n

Thompson, 50, was killed<\/a> in December 2024 as he walked to a Manhattan hotel for UnitedHealth Group\u2019s annual investor conference.<\/p>\n

Surveillance video showed a masked gunman shooting him from behind. Police say “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were written on the ammunition, mimicking a phrase used to describe how insurers avoid paying claims.<\/p>\n

United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Manhattan. (United Healthcare) <\/p>\n

Mangione was arrested five days later at a McDonald\u2019s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 230 miles west of Manhattan.<\/p>\n

As CEO, Thompson led a firm that provides health coverage to more than 49 million Americans \u2014 more than the population of Spain. United is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans, the privately run versions of the U.S. government\u2019s Medicare program for people age 65 and older. The company also sells individual insurance and administers health-insurance coverage for thousands of employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs.<\/p>\n
