{"id":322243,"date":"2026-08-15T21:20:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T21:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/322243\/"},"modified":"2026-08-15T21:20:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T21:20:09","slug":"man-64-dies-after-suffering-medical-episode-in-police-custody-in-east-harlem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/322243\/","title":{"rendered":"Man, 64, dies after suffering medical episode in police custody in East Harlem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 64-year-old man died after suffering a medical episode while in police custody in East Harlem, cops said.<\/p>\n<p>Officers attempted to perform CPR on the man Friday morning when he started to have a medical episode around 12:20 a.m. inside the NYPD\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/nypd\/bureaus\/patrol\/precincts\/25th-precinct.page\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">25th Precinct stationhouse<\/a> on E. 119th St. at Park Ave., police said.<\/p>\n<p>EMS transported the man to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/locations\/mount-sinai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mount Sinai Hospital<\/a> where he later died around 2:40 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The city medical examiner\u2019s office was working to determine the man\u2019s cause of death. His identity is being withheld as cops make efforts to notify his family first.<\/p>\n<p>Officers responded to a veterans residence on E. 119th about two blocks west of the precinct after a report of a violent male with a weapon. Arriving at the scene, they found the man acting erratically and took him into custody for criminal mischief and menacing, police sources said.<\/p>\n<p>At the precinct, the man was asked if he needed medical attention and answered no, according to sources.
