NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) \u2014 Months after White House border czar Tom Homan warned that ICE agents would surge New York City<\/a>, immigration groups have identified some communities that have been a target for increased enforcement. <\/p>\n

In the last two weeks, a surge in ICE enforcement has been seen in the following neighborhoods, as identified by the New York Immigration Coalition.<\/p>\n

Inwood, Manhattan<\/p>\n

Washington Heights, Manhattan<\/p>\n

Port Richmond, Staten Island<\/p>\n

Stapleton, Staten Island<\/p>\n

Sunset Park, Brooklyn<\/p>\n

Dyker Heights, Brooklyn<\/p>\n

Bensonhurst, Brooklyn<\/p>\n

Cypress Hills, Brooklyn<\/p>\n

Advocates at Make the Road New York also previously reported increased ICE enforcement in the following Queens neighborhoods<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elmhurst<\/p>\n

East Elmhurst<\/p>\n

College Point <\/p>\n

Corona<\/p>\n

Local elected leaders have spoken out against the increased activity in their district, including Council Member Carmen De La Rosa and Assembly Member Gonz\u00e1lez-Rojas.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo hate, no fear \u2014 immigrants are always welcome here,\u201d wrote De La Rosa in a social media post shortly after a woman was pepper-sprayed by an ICE agent<\/a> in Inwood on July 28. \u201cWe must keep showing up and making it clear \u2014 ICE needs to get out of NYC.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn New York, we will not be intimidated into silence. We will defend our neighbors, protect our immigrant families, and fight like hell for a future where every person\u2014regardless of immigration status\u2014can live safely, freely, and with dignity,\u201d said Rojas, who represents District 34. She rallied alongside immigration advocates in Queens on Monday, in protest against the surge in ICE enforcement. <\/p>\n

New York Public Advocate Jumaane Williams canvassed Southeast Queens on Saturday to help educate residents on their rights around temporary protected status and immigration enforcement. It comes after a notice published by the Department of Homeland Security revealed that ICE would soon be outfitted with electric shock gloves<\/a> for operations.<\/p>\n
