Ugly antisemitic, racist and homophobic flyers have mysteriously been popping up in Chelsea, opposing an ambitious<\/a>, first-of-its kind city housing redevelopment project in the Manhattan neighborhood, a Post investigation found.<\/p>\n

The project is a public-private partnership between the New York City Housing Authority, Essen Development and The Related Companies to demolish and replace crumbling buildings<\/a> in the Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Houses.<\/p>\n

The massive overhaul is expected to bring 3,454 new, mixed-income homes \u2014 including up to 1,038 permanently affordable units \u2014 and has the backing of a variety of local pols, such as Mayor Zohran Mamdani,<\/a> Rep. Jerry Nadler, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, state Sen. Erik Bottcher and City Councilman Carl Wilson.<\/p>\n

But locals have been troubled by a series of hateful posters that have cropped up near the NYCHA complex.<\/a><\/p>\n

One such flyer lambasted \u201cforeign wealth dirty zionist money\u201d and dubbed the project \u201cRelated (to zionist) Cos.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another said: \u201cBEWARE: TALMUDISTS ARE TRAINED TO CHEAT. \u201c<\/p>\n

A bizarre poster calls the fight over the redevelopment a \u201cSOS NYCHA Holocaust Battle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet another disturbing sign said, \u201cLocals vs. zionists, \u201cLocals vs Epstein Clowns\u2026Locals vs. Rothschilds, Locals vs. Talmudists\u2026.Locals vs. foreign operatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vile flyers attack the project as \u201cZionist\u201d and target specific officials like state Sen. Erik Bottcher and NYCHA exec Lakeesha Miller. James Messerschmidt for NY Post<\/p>\n

One poster hurled a sickening homophobic slur at Bottcher, who is gay. Another took aim at Lakeesha Miller, NYCHA\u2019s executive vice president of leased housing, who is black, with \u201cDEI hire?!\u2026Unqualified?! \u2026Incompetent?! Compromised?!\u201d and quizzical emojis.<\/p>\n

Miller, according to her LinkedIn bio, has 27 years of experience in the housing sector, including with NYCHA since 2012.<\/p>\n

Sources said they believe one provocateur is behind the bigoted posters, which also call for supporters of the redevelopment to be \u201cprosecuted\u201d and include other bizarre rantings.<\/p>\n

The overhaul of the dilapidated <\/a>Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Houses will first refurbish all 2,056 existing units as permanently affordable homes for NYCHA residents, and then begin construction on the thousands of new units.<\/p>\n

Despite legitimate project concerns, residents and officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, condemn the bigoted flyers as \u201cvile.\u201d James Messerschmidt for NY Post<\/p>\n

Residents and workers said there were legitimate concerns about the project, which requires demolition and massive construction \u2014 but agreed that the posters crossed the line.<\/p>\n

Amy Powell 54, a resident who works in corporate training, called the placards \u201cvery incendiary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only do they directly target individuals by name, they bring up, questions about Jewish- American relations in a really inflammatory way and it seems to me that it distracts from the actual important issues more than helping people be more informed about the community,\u201d Powell said.<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cIt just feels like slinging accusations and just saying things that are gonna make people get fired up and angry,\u201d Powell added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re definitely just trying to get people agitated and upset.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s nonsense,\u201d he said of the posters. \u201cWhat does Zionism have to do with housing \u2026 I don\u2019t see the connection at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not good to just turn Zionism into some bad word,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s already an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nei Cruz, 64, a freelance make-up artist, said it was wrong for opponents of the project to target certain groups of people.<\/p>\n

\u201c[It] sounds like they are targeting certain groups of ethnicity and that may not be right. I\u2019m anti-Zionist but my family is Jewish \u2026 see what I mean?\u201d he said. \u201cYou have to be careful before you put these messages out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are vile, antisemitic, racist and homophobic posters, and this kind of bigotry has absolutely no place in our city\u2019s political discourse,\u201d said Mamdani spokesman Sam Raskin.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Yorkers can express their views without resorting to antisemitism, racism, homophobia and dehumanizing imagery and rhetoric. As the mayor has said, the Mamdani administration will continue using every tool at our disposal to stamp out hatred of all kinds and build a city where every New Yorker is not only safe, but experiences a true sense of inclusion and belonging.\u201d<\/p>\n

NYCHA spokesman Michael Horgan said, \u201cWe strongly condemn the targeting and harassment of staff members, who are dedicated public servants working every day to assist New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs always, we remain focused on carrying out the Authority\u2019s work and on delivering this forward-thinking project as it was promised to the benefit of 2,056 NYCHA households. Since 2019, residents have helped to outline the plan that addresses over $900 million in mounting physical needs at Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea while maintaining their rights and protections.\u201d<\/p>\n

The construction plan will be phased in to minimize disruption to current residents and the community, project planners said.<\/p>\n

Nearly every resident \u2014 94% of households \u2014 will be able to remain in their existing apartments until their new homes are built and ready for occupancy.<\/p>\n

The remaining 6%, just over 100 households, are being relocated to refreshed units on the Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea campus during this phase.<\/p>\n
