Sometimes a rescue story is worth telling twice. A wildlife rehabber in Western New York is drawing fresh attention to one squirrel’s recovery after reposting a rehab-and-release video celebrating the animal’s return to the wild — and the care it took to get there.

Here’s what to know

Shared again on TikTok, the clip revisits the squirrel’s path through rehabilitation and release, with the rehabber hoping the animal’s story reaches more people this time.

Explaining the repost in the caption, rescuer Jes at Wildside of West New York (@wildsideofwny) wrote, “Trying this one again because this pretty girl deserves more eye balls on her. And, I’m proud of both of us.”

The video highlights a rehab-and-release outcome, showing how that kind of care can demand time, expertise, and a focus on what is best for the animal rather than on keeping it nearby.

One commenter wrote, “thank you for saving that little life.”

“You are a part of the reason that I haven’t given up on people,” another said. “Hero Status.”

More background

Local rehabbers often step in when people come across injured or orphaned wildlife and don’t know what to do next.

Their work can help native animals recover while also showing neighbors that wild animals usually have the best chance when they are treated by trained rescuers and eventually released.

What can be done?

Supporting wildlife and environmental efforts close to home can mean volunteering, learning who your local licensed rehabbers are, or taking local environmental action in ways that strengthen habitats for native animals.

Financial support can matter, too. Rehab work often requires food, supplies, transport, and medical care, and many caretakers rely on community generosity.

People interested in helping similar efforts can also explore ways to donate money to climate causes and broader environmental work.

“Oh my heart,” a commenter wrote on the rescue video. “Bless you for having such a beautiful heart!”

Get TCD’s free newsletters for easy tips, smart advice, and a chance to earn $5,000 toward home upgrades.
