{"id":324121,"date":"2026-08-18T16:24:40","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T16:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/324121\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T16:24:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T16:24:40","slug":"officials-tour-site-of-first-city-owned-grocery-store-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/324121\/","title":{"rendered":"Officials tour site of first city-owned grocery store"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mamdani administration is moving one step closer to opening its first city-run grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday morning, a slew of potential operators walked into the future site of <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2026\/05\/18\/the-bronx-to-get-first-city-run-grocery-store--mamdani-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Bronx\u2019s city-run grocery store<\/a>, set to open before the end of next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the goal here is that people can raise a family in New York. And stay in New York and that this is a place for everyone,\u201d Waverly Neer, the senior vice president of the Economic Development Corporation, said.<\/p>\n<p>The operator of the site will be responsible for day-to-day-management, staffing and stocking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The South Bronx site is just one of five city-run grocery stores that will be in each borough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The stores <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/2026\/07\/27\/nyc-s-city-owned-stores-to-sell-grocery-staples-at-30--discount\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will have a 30% discount on an essential list of items<\/a>, including dairy, meat and produce. The discounts will be subsidized by the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The location looks to mark a new chapter in the life of the changing block that once housed troubled teens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to hear from the community about what they want inside of this space and how it can be more impactful for New Yorkers. We want to be complimentary to neighborhoods we are going into,\u201d Neer said.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, on the same corner are a bodega and a wholesale meat market.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The site is part of The Peninsula in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, a mixed-use development that includes hundreds of affordable homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Local residents said they welcome the new store, as the newest grocery stores are either too far or at the top of a hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A tour of <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/manhattan\/news\/2026\/04\/13\/zohran-mamdani-city-owned-grocery-store-east-harlem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a second site in East Harlem<\/a> \u2014 at La Marqueta under the Metro-North Railroad tracks \u2014 is expected to take place Wednesday.
