{"id":32472,"date":"2025-11-07T22:06:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T22:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/32472\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T22:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T22:06:08","slug":"republicans-scorn-absurd-non-starter-schumer-offer-to-end-shutdown-after-38-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/32472\/","title":{"rendered":"Republicans scorn &#8216;absurd,&#8217; &#8216;non-starter&#8217; Schumer offer to end shutdown after 38 days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congressional Republicans roundly rejected Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/05\/us-news\/trump-admin-live-updates-supreme-court-tariffs-hearing-government-shutdown-more-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201ccompromise\u201d offer to end the government shutdown<\/a>\u00a0after 37 days, accusing Democrats of \u201cholding the entire country hostage\u201d\u00a0as President Trump demanded they keep working through the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In a floor speech Friday, Schumer\u00a0(D-NY) called for\u00a0a \u201cclean, one-year extension\u201d of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/11\/opinion\/forget-obamacare-subsidies-its-time-to-mend-or-end-the-whole-thing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Affordable Care Act<\/a>\u00a0(ACA) subsidies\u00a0set to expire at the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The extension through Dec. 31, 2026, would have been appended to a stopgap funding bill that if passed, would have allowed time to negotiate longer-term government appropriations through Sept. 30, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has offered a \u201ccompromise\u201d to end the ongoing government shutdown. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter so many\u00a0[14]\u00a0failed votes, it\u2019s clear we need to try something different,\u201d\u00a0argued the Brooklyn Democrat, flanked by members of his conference.\u00a0\u201cWhat the Senate is doing isn\u2019t working for either party \u2014 and isn\u2019t working for the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats would like to see an end to the shutdown \u2014 and we want to respect\u00a0[Senate Majority]\u00a0Leader\u00a0[John]\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/04\/us-news\/senate-majority-leader-says-he-doesnt-have-the-votes-to-eliminate-filibuster-despite-trumps-wishes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Thune\u2019s desire not to negotiate<\/a>\u00a0on ACA until after the government reopens,\u201d\u00a0Schumer went on, adding that his offer was \u201cnot a negotiation,\u201d but \u201can extension of current law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The minority leader went on to call for the creation of \u201ca bipartisan committee that will continue negotiations after the government reopens on reforms ahead of next year\u2019s enrollment period, to provide long-term certainty that health care costs will be more affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need Republicans to just say, \u2018Yes,\u2019\u201d Schumer concluded.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t take long for GOP lawmakers and aides in both chambers of Congress to respond with a resounding\u00a0\u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schumer proposed a \u201cclean, one-year extension\u201d of the Affordable Care Act. X\/@freedomcaucus<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s an indication that they\u2019re feeling the heat, and they know that their last proposal was unserious and unrealistic,\u201d Thune told reporters, \u201cso I guess you could characterize that as progress, but I just don\u2019t think that it gets anywhere close to what we need to do here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Had the Senate taken up Schumer on his offer, the bill would have had to pass the House of Representatives before going to Trump\u2019s desk to reopen the government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a nonstarter for the Republican Study Committee,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepPfluger\/status\/1986888791202619402\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">responded<\/a>\u00a0Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas), who serves as chairman of the largest group of House GOP lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an absurd offer from Chuck Schumer,\u201d added\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/freedomcaucus\/status\/1986891511380807999\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">the conservative House Freedom Caucus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenate Democrats are now saying they\u2019ll ONLY agree to reopen the government if we extend the temporary COVID Obamacare subsidies for health insurance companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re holding the entire country hostage to protect their failing health care scheme and enrich insurance companies, while funding abortion, child sex changes, and exacerbating fraud \u00a0\u2014 all while families go without paychecks,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>The conservative House Freedom Caucus claimed the minority leader\u2019s offer was absurd. JOHN G MABANGLO\/EPA\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Friday evening, Trump insisted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115510485436664476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in a Truth Social post<\/a>\u00a0that Republicans should either reach \u201ca Deal to end the Democrat Shutdown\u201d or \u201cterminate the Filibuster\u201d \u2014 which Thune has rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer\u2019s proposal came on the 38th day of the federal shutdown \u2014 now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/05\/us-news\/government-shutdown-becomes-the-longest-on-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the longest in US history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional Democratic constituencies, including the largest unions representing federal employees and air traffic controllers, have called for an end to the shutdown by passing the Republican-backed so-called \u201cclean\u201d continuing resolution.<\/p>\n<p>The shutdown began on Oct. 1 after all but three\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/23\/us-news\/senate-dems-block-bill-to-pay-federal-workers-during-weeks-long-shutdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Senate Democrats blocked<\/a>\u00a0that bill, which would have funded the government at current levels until Nov. 21.<\/p>\n<p>The government shutdown has reached its 38th day, marking it the longest one in U.S. history. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers have refused to advance the legislation no fewer than 14 times, keeping it from clearing the Senate\u2019s 60-vote filibuster.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans hold a narrow 53-47 majority in the upper chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Schumer and House Minority Leader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/27\/media\/jeffries-spars-with-cbs-host-on-claims-the-upcoming-midterms-will-be-rigged-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hakeem Jeffries<\/a>\u00a0(D-NY) demanded a White House meeting with President Trump to negotiate an end to the shutdown \u2014 after an earlier sitdown yielded no results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president\u2019s position has not changed,\u201d a White House official told The Post Friday. \u201cHe has repeatedly made clear he is only open to discussing policy with the Democrats when they reopen the government and stop holding the American people hostage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) have taken the same line in response to Democrats\u2019 demands regarding health care subsidies. Both have also needled Dems for suggesting that the shutdown has given their party \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/22\/us-news\/dems-admit-to-prolonging-shutdown-for-leverage-as-nov-1-open-enrollment-deadline-nears\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">leverage<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there will be some pretty substantial damage to a Democratic brand that has been rehabilitated if on the heels of an election, in which the people told us to keep fighting, we immediately stop fighting,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/26\/us-news\/sen-chris-murphy-says-dems-could-end-shutdown-if-gop-agrees-to-20-billion-deal-less-than-prior-1-5-trillion-ask\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sen.
