Raleigh police announced another teenager has been taken into custody in connection to the Fourth of July shootings and violence that took place when thousands of teens gathered at Brier Creek and on Glenwood South.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday during a city meeting to discuss a proposed teen curfew, Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce announced that another teen was taken into custody on Tuesday in connection with the shooting at Brier Creek. U.S. marshals arrested the 15-year-old in New York’s Staten Island borough.<\/p>\n
The teen is charged with two counts of assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, felony riot, discharging a firearm into occupied property and possession of a firearm by a minor.<\/p>\n
The 15-year-old is being held at a juvenile facility in New York as they await to be brought back to North Carolina.<\/p>\n
Since the violence, several people have been detained or charged in connection, including more than two dozen adults between 18 to 24 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n
More than half a dozen of the people taken into custody so far have been juveniles between the ages of 15 and 17, and some are facing charges as adults.<\/a><\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tRaleigh leaders discuss teen curfew<\/p>\n City leaders heard from the public Tuesday on Raleigh\u2019s proposed\u00a0youth curfew ordinance<\/a>. Shortly after the city attorney presented a draft ordinance for discussion, members of the public weighed in.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are seeing the trend of violence with our juveniles increase year over year,\u201d Chief Rico Boyce said.<\/p>\n Under the draft ordinance, a person 18 or younger would be in violation of the curfew if they were in a public place between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.\u00a0Exceptions would include young people traveling to or from work, home, school or a religious activity; participating in a First Amendment-protected activity; accompanied by an adult; or experiencing an emergency.<\/p>\n None of the more than a dozen people who signed up to speak about the curfew expressed support for it.<\/p>\n \u201cThey can’t go to the mall, the movies. There are curfews already in place where, when I was a kid, I hung out at. We need to ask them where they need to go, what they need,\u201d said Ramiyah Robinson of the Education Justice Alliance.<\/p>\n Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Fayetteville and other North Carolina cities already have youth curfews in place.<\/p>\n The draft ordinance has been posted for public review, and the city plans to hold a public hearing on Sept. 15. The council took no action on the proposal Tuesday.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tMassive July Fourth gatherings end in violence<\/p>\n Police officers said that the first large gathering began at the\u00a0Brier Creek Commons<\/a>\u00a0shopping center on the Fourth of July, where 3,000 teens showed up for a Star Spangled Block Party held near the shopping center’s clocktower.<\/p>\n After the teens were removed from the venue, police say a large fight broke out, and two adults were injured after shots were fired. One adult was hit by gunfire, while the other was hit by glass from a shot-out car window.<\/p>\n Later that evening, police said about 5,000 teens flooded Glenwood South, where fights broke out.
