{"id":325278,"date":"2026-08-19T21:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T21:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/325278\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T21:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T21:18:09","slug":"port-charlotte-man-charged-in-stabbing-of-tourist-in-new-york-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/325278\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Charlotte man charged in stabbing of tourist in New York City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">NEW YORK (WWSB) &#8211; A Port Charlotte man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing of a teenage tourist in New York City, authorities said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The 19-year-old Australian tourist was stabbed multiple times in a midtown New York McDonald\u2019s Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The incident happened around 2 a.m. at the restaurant on Eighth Avenue near Penn Station. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Police said the attack was unprovoked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Juan Mercedes, 25, of Port Charlotte was arrested and charged with assault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Nearby residents say random stabbings around the city as their reason to avoid the Penn Station area as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Despite the stabbing, crime statistics from the NYPD showing assaults in the Midtown South Precinct are down about 5% from this time last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The investigation into the stabbing in continuing. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WWSB.
