While the townhouse’s overall layout remained largely untouched, the third floor was reimagined as an expansive primary suite. A bathroom now anchors the front, with the bedroom set toward the garden. The palette is relatively subdued – aside from a green and beige rug nodding to antique tapestries, a fainting sofa in embroidered purple, and a rust-hued painting by Liorah Tchiprout. ‘It ended up being the piece that brought everything together at the end,’ says the client of the figurative work, part of a growing collection of contemporary pieces she has carefully assembled.

In the study, custom oak millwork shapes both the bed and desk, which is paired with a 1960s Polish Boomerang chair. A brass desk lamp from 1950s Germany and a Henrii sconce provide task lighting, while a Swedish brass and glass chandelier from the 1940s hangs overhead. The vintage Sarouk rug is from Rug & Kilim. Custom bedding in Mulberry Home velvet adds a layer of richness.

One flight up, on the top floor, are two distinctly patterned guest rooms and a library designed to allow the filmmaker to spend entire days immersed in her writing. Bookshelves wrap the room in a U-shape, with a daybed tucked beneath the window – a self-contained nook that Melissa likens to a sleeper carriage. ‘You really have everything you need there,’ she says.

An antique Turkish kilim from Rug & Kilim softens the black and white ceramic floors of the downstairs landing, where an antique bobbin bench with a jute seat sits alongside a vintage pine dry sink. House of Hackney wallpaper and an Anna Hayman sconce add pattern and warmth, with a floral embroidered lamp and The Shade Store curtains.

William Jess Laird

For Melissa, the room also reflects the philosophy that guided the entire project: designing not simply for looks, but for feeling and atmosphere. The designer and her team responded to the homeowner’s energy, which pushed the studio into new territory. ‘It felt really nice to use a creative muscle we didn’t know existed.’ @bespokeonly
