{"id":327205,"date":"2026-08-22T04:26:20","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T04:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/327205\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T04:26:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T04:26:20","slug":"rare-tornado-touches-down-on-long-island-during-nyc-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/327205\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare tornado touches down on Long Island during NYC storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) \u2014 The National Weather Service confirmed that a <a href=\"https:\/\/partnerservices.nws.noaa.gov\/products\/cache\/233-2026\/PNSOKX\/d003c17c81022f096bd8d6ddb33eb875\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tornado touched down<\/a> at Long Island\u2019s Atlantic Beach on Thursday evening amid powerful storms in the New York City area.<\/p>\n<p>No serious injuries were reported, but the tornado forced the temporary closing of the Silver Point and Sun &amp; Surf Beach Clubs after damage to cabanas. It was the first confirmed tornado in Nassau County since 2021. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRadar data, video of the waterspout coming onshore, and damage reports in the vicinity of the Sun and Surf Beach club in Atlantic Beach allow for confirmation of a tornadic touchdown in this area,\u201d the weather service said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>A separate tornado <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWS_MountHolly\/status\/2090633861764125100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">touched<\/a> down near Dover, Delaware, Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/post\/cleanup-underway-tornado-rips-dover-delaware\/19712517\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">striking<\/a> two hotels along the Dupont Highway according to local news reports.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-08-20\/nyc-thunderstorms-threaten-evening-commute-disrupt-air-travel\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Heavy rain and thunderstorms<\/a> engulfed much of the East Coast Thursday, flooding roads and triggering ground stops at major airports. Hundreds of flights were canceled and some departures were delayed by hours.<\/p>\n<p>In New York, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency and activated the county\u2019s Emergency Operations Center as storms intensified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not something that you plan for, tornadoes form in an instant,\u201d Blakeman, a Republican who\u2019s running for New York Governor, said in a press conference Friday morning. <\/p>\n<p>About 50 cabanas were damaged, he said.
