King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard<\/a> surprised fans with Max Weinberg at a recent show in Queens \u2013 check out footage below.<\/p>\n

The moment took place on Friday (August 21), during their show at Queens\u2019 Forest Hills Stadium.\u00a0The E Street Band<\/a> drummer took to the stage to fill in for his son, former Slipknot<\/a> drummer Jay Weinberg, who is a longtime King Gizzard collaborator.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the crowd midway through the performance, guitarist Joey Walker said:\u00a0\u201cIn continuing with the tradition that we started over the last year or so, where we get our friend Jay Weinberg to come out and play a song with us \u2013 it\u2019d be rude not to.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Jay\u2019s busy, he\u2019s down in Nashville, so Jay made a call: \u2018Alright, I\u2019m going to call dad.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, we got Max Weinberg, drove all the way from Atlantic City to come up and play a song with us, so give it up for fucking Max Weinberg,\u201d he added. He then came out and joined the band onstage, playing alongside regular drummer Michael Cavanagh for \u2018Hot Water\u2019 from their 2014 album \u2018I\u2019m in Your Mind Fuzz\u2019.<\/p>\n

Jay Weinberg\u2019s cameos on stage are part of a running bit since he first stepped in for the band during a 2024 Nashville show.\u00a0He was last on stage with King Gizzard only a week earlier at the band\u2019s Field of Vision II festival in Colorado, playing on \u2018Hell\u2019.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Jay Weinberg spoke about all of his new musical projects, and said that he is now able to pursue them after a period of not having the \u201clegal ability\u201d to work with other artists<\/a> while in Slipknot.<\/p>\n

The drummer\u00a0parted ways with the iconic metal band back in 2023<\/a>, after they made a \u201ccreative decision\u201d to go in a different direction. He joined in 2013, and\u00a0said he was \u201cheartbroken and blindsided\u201d by the move<\/a>\u00a0at the time. He then\u00a0revealed earlier this year that he thinks the decision \u201cremains confusing\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for King Gizzard, earlier this month they released their 28th studio album \u2018Alien Metal\u2019. They had previously shared a snippet of the record that indicated a turn toward a techno-driven sound<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It comes after the band hit\u00a0out at their\u00a0apparent\u00a0AI replacement on\u00a0Spotify<\/a>\u00a0late last year.\u00a0It came after they announced that\u00a0they were pulling all of their music from the platform<\/a>\u00a0over their opposition to the company\u2019s founder, Daniel Ek, funding the Helsing corporation.<\/p>\n

Ek co-founded the investment company Prima Materia, which has invested over \u20ac600million in Helsing, a Munich-based company creating drones and artificial intelligence for military operations, per the\u00a0Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following their withdrawal, a series of songs were uploaded to a Spotify page named King Lizard Wizard, with some believing they were AI-generated. King Gizzard frontman Stu Mackenzie was credited as the composer on the tracks.<\/p>\n

On their alleged AI replacement, Mackenzie told\u00a0The Music<\/a>: \u201cTrying to see the irony in this situation. But seriously wtf we are truly doomed\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mackenzie later explained their decision<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019ve\u00a0been saying fuck Spotify for years. In our circle of musician friends,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0what people say all the time, for\u00a0all of\u00a0these other reasons which are well documented.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to explain that while he doesn\u2019t consider himself an activist and was not comfortable \u201csoapboxing\u201d, it felt like\u00a0\u201ca decision staying true to ourselves, and doing what we think is\u00a0is\u00a0right for our\u00a0music, having our music in places that we feel all right about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing that made it hard was I do want to have our\u00a0music be\u00a0accessible to people,\u201d he added.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0really care about making money from streaming. I know\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0unfair, and I know they are banking so much. But for me personally, I just want to make music, and I want people to be able to listen to it. The hard part was to take that away from so many people.\u201d<\/p>\n
