Monsoon season: Jinkx Monsoon \u2013 two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner and Broadway star \u2013 has taken Britain by storm this summer. Next, she will take on the title role in Oh, Mary!, the smash-hit comedy from former Tatler cover star Cole Escola<\/p>\n

The stars are aligning for Jinkx Monsoon. Quite literally. Zooming in from her new base in London<\/a>, she is basking in the aftereffects of the solar eclipse, one of three, she tells me, coinciding with the \u2018Lion\u2019s Gate Portal\u2019, or the cosmic alignment of the sun in Leo, the star Sirius, and the Earth. \u2018So we\u2019re entering a point of transition and reformation: Things are going to be broken down and built back up again,\u2019 she says, with a voice like syrup if syrup could cackle. \u2018And I\u2019ve been waiting for that, for f***\u2019s sake.\u2019<\/p>\n It\u2019s true, she\u2019s earned a break. This summer, \u2018Monsoon Season\u2019 has come to Britain. Jinkx, perhaps once best known to UK audiences for winning RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race not once but twice, has taken theatreland by storm with her performance as Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow (\u2018the talk of the town,\u2019 said critics). Her \u2018Speaking of Witch\u2019 tour followed, taking her up and down the country with a \u2018wonderfully strange\u2019 blend of stand-up and cabaret. Before flying over, she made her Broadway debut in Chicago (\u2018goosebump-producing\u2019), starred in Little Shop of Horrors (\u2018an Audrey for the ages\u2019) and Pirates! The Penzance Musical (\u2018canonised as one of the all-time comedy greats\u2019), and performed at Carnegie Hall. Now, she\u2019s following in the footsteps of former Tatler cover star Cole Escola on the West End<\/a> in Oh, Mary, a role she has already played in New York<\/a>. Twice.\u2018For f***\u2019s sake,\u2019 indeed.<\/p>\n \u2018I get tired, of course,\u2019 she says of her remarkable resum\u00e9 since 2023. \u2018But the world feels really screwed up right now, and the only time that I know I\u2019m doing exactly what I\u2019m supposed to be doing to try to help anything is when I\u2019m on stage. I\u2019ve become kind of a workaholic, and I\u2019m talking to my therapist about it because truly I don\u2019t have a lot of interests outside of my work. It\u2019s like: work, cats, video<\/a> games, advocacy. I\u2019m pretty simple these days.\u2019<\/p>\n It doesn\u2019t hurt that she\u2019s having the time of her life. \u2018Part of why I\u2019m a workaholic is because my work is very, very fun<\/a> to me,\u2019 she says. As a drag artist, she\u2019s as likely to do plays as she is to write and tour new standup material or new music, and each year she has a holiday production with friend and frequent collaborator, BenDeLaCreme. But the ability to work with such variety has been hard-earned. \u2018I\u2019ve had tunnel vision for a long time now, because this has always been what I wanted to do.
