We\u00a0could see BOOP!\u00a0at the library! The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts has announced that\u00a0BOOP! The Musical<\/a>, the 2025 Broadway musical starring Jasmine Amy Rogers<\/a>, is now available to view at the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive. That’s right fans, now you can relive\u00a0Jerry Mitchell<\/a>‘s glorious choreography and Rogers’ infectious\u00a0performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There is a catch though. You can only view it once.<\/p>\n

The Theatre on Film and Tape Archive\u00a0features more than 4,000 filmed recordings of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows dating back to 1970\u2014new recordings are released after shows have closed. Other recently released titles include Gypsy<\/a> starring Audra McDonald<\/a>,\u00a0The Picture of Dorian Gray<\/a>\u00a0starring Sarah Snook<\/a>, and John Proctor is the Villain<\/a> starring Sadie Sink<\/a>. You can also watch the iconic original productions of\u00a0A Chorus Line\u00a0and\u00a0The Phantom of the Opera.<\/p>\n

But before you run to the library, you need to remember that these filmed productions are captured for research purposes. That means they’re more barebones than a typical commercial live stage capture, often captured with only one camera. In addition, you must have a valid NYPL library card and you can only watch these productions onsite at the Lincoln Center branch while a librarian is present. Each production can only be viewed once. <\/p>\n

There is an exception to the on-site rule: New York City teachers<\/a> can show the productions in the NYPL archives off-site in a classroom (so students can watch BOOP! as part of a course on 20th-century iconic cartoons).<\/p>\n

These restrictions are how TOFT can capture Broadway shows and make them available to the general public for free, and without paying additional royalties\u00a0any of the artists involved\u2014because these recordings can only be accessed in a limited capacity for research purposes.<\/p>\n

BOOP!\u00a0ran on Broadway in spring 2025 for four months. It received three Tony Award nominations, including one for Rogers’ performance.\u00a0Featuring a book by Bob Martin<\/a>, music by David Foster<\/a>, and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead<\/a>, the musical brings the classic animated character to the stage, following her as she travels from her cartoon black-and-white world into modern-day New York City to learn a little bit more about herself and bring inspiration to jaded New Yorkers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
