New York City property owners have more time to seek a break from the new pied-\u00e0-terre tax after the Finance Department further extended the deadline for exemption applications.<\/p>\n
Property owners who received letters indicating they may be subject to the surcharge on second homes now have until Oct. 6 to apply for an exemption, according to a department webpage<\/a> for the surcharge. The city previously extended<\/a> the original exemption application deadline from late August to Sept. 18 in the face of pushback over the tax\u2019s rollout.<\/p>\n The levy applies to single-family homes with market values of $5 million or more, and co-ops and condominiums worth at least $1 million. The city, which cast a wide net<\/a> to find properties subject to the tax, has said that only owners who received a notice from the city must appeal it or otherwise pay it on next year\u2019s tax bill.<\/p>\n A group of homeowners is suing<\/a> to delay Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s rollout of the tax, saying the publication of a list of properties that could be subject to it caused \u201cmass confusion\u201d and invited \u201cunwarranted scrutiny\u201d of their personal information.
