That\u2019s a wrap on a popular Kips Bay movie theater.<\/p>\n

The curtain is closing on the AMC Kips Bay 15<\/a> after becoming a staple for moviegoers for nearly three decades. The theater opened back in 1999 with five screens on Second Avenue and then moved to its current location \u2014 570 2nd Ave \u2014 in 2006.<\/p>\n

An AMC<\/a> employee has confirmed to The Post that no date has been set for the closure and the location will operate until the end of the year. The plot thickens, as the employee said not even its manager was told their last day.<\/p>\n

According to ABC News<\/a>, the property owner is ending the lease before its scheduled expiration and \u201cdetails are still being finalized.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe theatre has been an important part of the Kips Bay community and surrounding neighborhoods, providing guests with a place to enjoy the magic of the movies together,\u201d a statement from the spokesperson read.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Movie lovers can still catch flicks at the three nearby locations: AMC Empire 25 IMAX in Times Square, AMC Lincoln Square and AMC 34th Street 14.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear what is taking its place, as no information has been released. However, a website called Save Kips Bay<\/a> is urging cinephiles to sign the petition to keep the neighborhood favorite as its the only IMAX in the area.<\/p>\n

It goes on to claim NYU Langone<\/a> will be taking over the lot, insisting that the block doesn\u2019t need another \u201cinstitutional medical space.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNYU Langone already dominates huge portions of Kips Bay. Now our neighborhood\u2019s only movie theater, a 15-screen AMC and the only IMAX on Manhattan\u2019s East Side, is reportedly threatened by yet another NYU medical expansion,\u201d the website reads.<\/p>\n

The owner of the theater is Kips Bay Development Limited Partnership, care of M.D. Carlisle Construction Corp. Neither NYU Langone nor the property owner has publicly stated whether NYU is taking over the space.<\/p>\n

The post reached out to NYC Langone for comment but has not heard back.<\/p>\n

\u201cKips Bay did not lose its theater to streaming, or to a bad quarter, or to a landlord who couldn\u2019t fill the space. It lost it because someone decided this block is worth more as something other than a neighborhood,\u201d the site read.<\/p>\n

AMC currently has 860 theaters across the globe and is the largest theater chain in the world. But in a February earnings call, CFO Sean Goodman revealed that AMC will be closing \u201cunderperforming locations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goodman also said that since 2020, AMC had shut down 213 locations, while opening 65 new theaters in the same timeframe.
