\u201cLocal cops can no longer be deputized to participate in disorderly raids that too often descend into chaos and violence,\u201d said New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul. \u201cAs I said at the top, local police will assist ICE only if a real crime has been committed, but on civil immigration matters, ICE is on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hochul said she was confident the law would hold up if local jurisdictions tried to sue. Her Republican opponent in the governor\u2019s race, Bruce Blakeman, Nassau County\u2019s executive, said the county is weighing its options.<\/p>\n
Mostly Democrat-led local and state governments have been attempting to curb ICE operations as the Trump administration crackdown continues.<\/p>\n
The Department of Homeland Security announced 1,300 arrests<\/a> around Washington, D.C., including parts of Virginia and Maryland, after a two-week operation.<\/p>\n In Maryland, some sheriffs have criticized Gov. Wes Moore\u2019s ban on ICE cooperation. <\/p>\n \u201cMaryland has decided it wants to be an ultra-sanctuary jurisdiction and passed terrible laws that we saw last session, ending our 287 agreement. Maryland has done its best to put up roadblocks to allow us to cooperate, to keep these people in our community,\u201d said Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, disputes have also played out. In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu urged parking lot and parking garage owners <\/a>not to rent out space to ICE agents. ICE Boston\u2019s X account criticized Wu and Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey<\/a>, tweeting, \u201cThese are the types of sick criminal aliens that Gov. Healey and Mayor Wu seek to protect,\u201d in response to an arrest of a child sex predator who was in the country illegally.<\/p>\n
