A national order took effect Tuesday at 6 p.m.<\/a>, lowering American flags to half staff at federal buildings, military installations, embassies and naval vessels nationwide following Parton’s death. New York’s state and local flags are being lowered alongside them.<\/p>\n

Parton’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, confirmed her death in a video posted to social media<\/a>, saying she passed peacefully in Nashville. No cause of death has been released, and for someone who spent her whole career giving fans everything else, that one detail feels like hers to keep private.<\/p>\n

The order itself came with a personal message, calling Parton “one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER,” according to Rolling Stone<\/a>. Flags at half staff for a musician is not something you see often. It usually goes to soldiers, presidents, and first responders. What always got me, though, was the Imagination Library. Parton’s literacy nonprofit has mailed free books to children across the country for years, New York included, and her team has said the program will keep sending books out even now. She built the Dollywood Foundation in 1988 and kept funding causes in her home region of East Tennessee for the rest of her life, from wildfire relief to children’s hospitals.<\/p>\n

Parton spent her career staying out of politics entirely, once telling NBC’s Today show in 2021 that she’d rather people remember her for her music than for any award tied to a particular administration. Maybe that’s part of why this tribute lands differently than most. It reads less like a political gesture and more like the whole country agreeing on something for once, which doesn’t happen a lot these days.<\/p>\n
