An NYPD exodus is already underway, with a surge of officers quitting in the month leading up to anti-cop socialist Zohran Mamdani\u2019s mayoral win \u2014 and more might go if Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch exits, according to data and department sources.<\/p>\n
The NYPD saw a 35% hike in cops of all ranks leaving in October \u2013 245 police officers compared to 181 in the same month last year, according to Police Pension Fund data.<\/p>\n
\u201cMorale is down because everyone is concerned about the policies Mamdani wants to put in place,\u201d said Detectives Endowment Association President Scott Munro.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a person who is supposed to be running New York City that does not believe in law enforcement,\u201d said Munro, a police officer for more than three decades. \u201cWhat\u2019s coming out of everyone\u2019s mouth is, \u2018We\u2019re in trouble.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Whether more cops leave in the coming months will depend on the \u201cTisch factor,\u201d a police union source said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf she leaves it may result in an uptick,\u201d the source said. \u201cIf she stays, maybe not.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Police Benevolent Association, which will have to negotiate a new contract with Mamdani, bemoaned that\u00a0the number of cops leaving could get worse<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery single month, we\u2019re losing enough cops to staff an entire precinct,\u201d PBA President Patrick Hendry said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt will certainly get worse if our city leaders don\u2019t work with us to fix our unsustainable workload, our expired contract and the constant second-guessing that is driving good cops away from the job.\u201d<\/p>\n SRG Commanding Officer Deputy Chief John D\u2019Adamo opted to retire the day after Mamdani was elected. Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n So far new hires have helped the force keep up with attrition this year. The department has a uniformed headcount of 33,745, compared to the 33,812 in 2024. The Force\u2019s peak staffing was 40,285 in 2000, according to\u00a0Independent Budget Office data<\/a>.<\/p>\n The most notable exit so far since the Mamdani election is that of Deputy Chief John D\u2019Adamo, the head of the Strategic Response Group \u2014 the unit that polices protests \u2014 which Mamdani has criticized and threatened to decommission.<\/p>\n
