shot and killed Friday night<\/a> near Crescent Street and Stanley Avenue in East New York in what investigators believe was a road rage incident.<\/p>\nSurveillance video captured tense moments between two people before shots were fired.<\/p>\n
Then, gunshots rang out as the car involved swerved around the moped. Singh was left to die in the street.<\/p>\n
Family members said Singh moved to the United States from India as a teenager and helped support his parents back home.<\/p>\n
“He’s a very nice guy. You know, he always working hard like all the time. You just go to work and go home and talk to his family,” Singh said.<\/p>\n
Japneet Singh, president of the New York Sikh Council, questioned the violence that led to the killing.<\/p>\n
“What else can happen is what I’m thinking. For you to take out a gun and shoot someone seven times,” Singh said.<\/p>\n
The New York Sikh Council organized the vigil, which drew support from community members.<\/p>\n
“Lot of the drivers, a lot of them in the South Asian, from the South Asian community, they, they go up and down these roads all the time. It’s important to show them that. Listen, we are with it as a community, not just South Asian community, as New York City,” Singh said.<\/p>\n
Renita Francois, the city’s first deputy mayor for community safety, said the administration continues efforts aimed at reducing gun violence.<\/p>\n
“We are investing in employment opportunities. We’re working on the quality of life issues in these communities. Right here at Pink Houses, we have the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety along with our gun violence initiatives. And so this administration has invested in this work,” Francois said.<\/p>\n
As the search for the suspect continues, family members are asking the public for any information. Community members are also raising funds to send Singh’s body back to his family in India.<\/p>\n
