Giving damning proof of the left\u2019s twisted priorities, Mayor Zohran Mamdani this week mourned the death of a Rikers inmate awaiting trial for a brutal murder \u2014 with nary a thought for Clarence Woodward\u2019s victim, or his survivors.<\/p>\n

Progressives never miss a chance to sympathize<\/a> with criminals; they see the only true crime to be putting people behind bars instead of addressing the \u201croot causes<\/a>\u201d of social dysfunction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am deeply saddened by the death of a New Yorker in City custody at a jail on Rikers Island early this morning,\u201d Mamdani tweeted Tuesday, also extending his sympathy to Woodward\u2019s \u201cfamily and loved ones as they grieve this loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Corrections Commissioner Stanley Richards likewise bemoaned the \u201ctragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodward took the life of Jose Miranda with a meat cleaver in a Bronx laundromat in 2024; Miranda\u2019s family rightly calls the mayor\u2019s words \u201ca slap in the face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, as the pro-criminal, \u201cclose Rikers\u201d<\/a> claque never tires of telling us, people awaiting trial in the city\u2019s jails are legally as innocent as kittens.<\/p>\n

Thing is, Woodward had just been released from prison on parole for assault and attempted robbery when he butchered Jose Miranda on camera. <\/p>\n

The true tragedy is how progs have \u201creformed\u201d the criminal-justice system to keep putting proven menaces (Woodward\u2019s rap sheet ran to 30 priors) back on the street.<\/p>\n

Fine, the mayor wasn\u2019t wrong to note that \u201ctoo many New Yorkers have died on Rikers Island\u201d; on the other hand, they\u2019re not being murdered by correction officers. <\/p>\n

Most of them die after a \u201cmedical emergency,\u201d often code for a drug overdose; others, at the hands of fellow inmates.<\/p>\n

Mamdani has long flaunted his affection for the denizens of Rikers, heading out there for a Ramadan iftar break-fast<\/a>, a June graduation ceremony and again last month to watch the England-Argentina World Cup<\/a> semifinal with a gang of inmates.<\/p>\n

Maybe he thinks hardened criminals are his core constituency?<\/p>\n

Or perhaps he just wants to keep pace with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, who offered \u201ccondolences\u201d for the family of a knife-wielding fiend killed by police in March 2025 after chasing two innocents into a Chick-fil-A.<\/p>\n

Inverting blame and reversing cause and effect is what the left does. <\/p>\n

It pretends thieves, thugs and killers are heroes striking out against injustice.<\/p>\n

And its sees those who stand against them \u2014 from police officers to ICE agents pursuing violent lawbreakers to soldiers fighting terrorism \u2014 as its worst enemies.<\/p>\n
