{"id":331454,"date":"2026-08-27T23:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T23:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/331454\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T23:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T23:56:09","slug":"devastation-from-flash-floods-in-nepal-being-felt-in-nyc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/331454\/","title":{"rendered":"Devastation from flash floods in Nepal being felt in NYC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The devastation from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nepal-tibet-missing-flash-flooding-mud-flow-glacier-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the flash floods that hit Nepal<\/a> Wednesday is being felt in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Rescue teams continue to search for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/360-dead-over-800-missing-in-nepal-mudslide\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hundreds of people missing along the Nepal-China border<\/a>. The death toll rose to 360 Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Some families in Queens are desperate for answers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dawa Cerpa, who owns A Taste of Nepal restaurant on 37th Road in Jackson Heights, says his uncle has been missing since the deadly torrent of water and mud several stories high swept through.<\/p>\n<p>Cerpa said he&#8217;s tried to reach loved ones by phone. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very tough in this time,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Many friends and one of my uncles, two days ago, they are not returning [calls].&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the same street, the owner of Nepali Momo Cafe says he knows a Queens resident who is also trying to find out if their relatives are alive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Very sad,&#8221; Hari Gharti Pun said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Travel agent Masjidul Robin says more than a dozen customers were traveling in Nepal and are alive, but they are now stranded. He said one man managed to fly through Qatar to return.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now, I&#8217;m helping them however I can,&#8221; Robin said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ang Pasang Sherpa, manager of the United Sherpa Association, said community members have been coming by to pray for their loved ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just met a lady in the morning, she came here. And she have the only brother &#8230; the brother is also missing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The consulate general of Nepal is joining a candlelight tribute for Nepal Thursday night at the Sherpa Center in Elmhurst.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They need a lot of help in this situation,&#8221; Sherpa said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The community in crisis is praying for those who died and holding on to hope for those missing.<\/p>\n<p>\n          More from CBS News\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"content__tags__label\">In:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The devastation from the flash floods that hit Nepal Wednesday is being felt in New York City.
