It\u2019s late August, which means the U.S. Open is back. For those capable of shelling out the dough necessary<\/a> to secure a seat at the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, the tournament is a showcase for both tennis and culinary ambition. As always, organizers have brought in new selections to pair with your Honey Deuce inside the stadium, but some of the most appealing food awaits just outside the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens\u2019s surrounding neighborhoods. We\u2019ve rounded up some of our favorites from inside the grounds and out for anyone who\u2019s hungry while watching a match \u2014 or just wants something good to eat with no tennis involved.<\/p>\n

A Superior Slice
If you\u2019ve got some downtime or just want to eat something before a match, it\u2019s worth an Uber ride to Masani Pizza<\/a> in Forest Hills. The family-owned spot has all the classics plus a top-rate cacio e pepe slice. Get an Italian ice or an ube-pandan ice-cream sandwich made in collaboration with Supermoon Bakehouse<\/a> on your way out.<\/p>\n

Legendary Dumplings
Flushing\u2019s White Bear<\/a> is one stop away on the 7 train. Its \u201cNo. 6\u201d \u2014 slippery, plump wontons awash in spicy chile oil and crowned with a generous heap of pickled veggies \u2014 is famous for a reason. They\u2019re also cheap: $10 for a dozen.<\/p>\n

Two Very Different Takes on Tacos
The menu at Tacos Don Jose 1<\/a> in Corona is tight and to the point: tacos al pastor and carnitas at just $4 and $4.50, respectively. Finish them off at the self-serve salsa station to the left of the register if you like a little heat. Or, if you\u2019re feeling spendy, Enrique Olvera\u2019s Cosme<\/a> has taken over the Food Village space at the Open that had been home to Mojito. You can find his trademark duck carnitas.<\/p>\n

The Most Viral Sandwich
West Village favorite Salt Hank\u2019s<\/a> is as famous for its French dips as it is for the lines that once spilled from its front door on Bleecker Street. The shop was recently bought by Wonder<\/a>, and if you want a preview of its future, try one of the dips at the Food Village.<\/p>\n

Grab-and-Go Pitas
French dips aren\u2019t the only option for bread and beef: Miznon<\/a>\u2019s fast-casual pitas arrive at the tennis center this year. Expect roasted rib eye, chicken schnitzel, and hummus with falafel.<\/p>\n

Simon Kim Expands Beyond Caviar Nuggets
Simon Kim\u2019s COQODAQ<\/a> Golden Nuggets \u2014 finished off with a plop of caviar \u2014 have quickly become an Open staple. Now, the empire-building restaurateur<\/a> is testing a new concept, KIMBOP, described as a dedicated stall offering \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 bulgogi gimbap. It\u2019ll also have a roster of its own cocktails that will compete with the fabled Honey Deuce for viral supremacy.<\/p>\n
