After firing up storms across the Great Lakes on Wednesday, a sweeping cold front moves east on Thursday, bringing active and\u00a0severe weather\u00a0threats to major cities across the\u00a0Northeast.<\/p>\n
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to start in the afternoon and carry into the evening as instability builds ahead of and along the front. <\/p>\n
Supercell\u00a0thunderstorms\u00a0will be possible, along with a risk of damaging\u00a0winds, large\u00a0hail,\u00a0and a few\u00a0tornadoes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Some of these storms in the evening could produce wind gusts of 60 mph or stronger<\/p>\n
Washington, D.C.,\u00a0Philadelphia\u00a0and\u00a0Baltimore\u00a0are some of the major cities under a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather threat Thursday.<\/p>\n
Specifically, New York City\u00a0is also included, alongside Philadelphia and Baltimore, in a Level 1 out of 5 tornado threat.<\/p>\n
According to the \u00a0FOX Forecast Center, \u201cThis is the seventh time this year that the metro has been put under a risk for tornadoes by the Storm Prediction Center. Last year it was only once.\u201d<\/p>\n
In total, more than 38 million Americans in the Northeast are under a Level 2 out of 5 severe threat on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Additionally, leftover clouds from these storms could obscure the view of the\u00a0partial lunar eclipse\u00a0into late Thursday night.<\/p>\n

On top of the severe storm threats, flash\u00a0flooding\u00a0is also possible, especially in areas already hit hard by flooding earlier this\u00a0summer.<\/p>\n
A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk is present from Philadelphia up into southern New York State for Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Philadelphia alone has already seen four flash flood warnings in 2026, with three occurring in August.<\/p>\n

Currently, the city is running over an inch and a half above average for rain month to date.<\/p>\n
Localized rain totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible through early Friday morning.<\/p>\n
