Our reporters go to the New York State Fair<\/a> every year \u2014 often on most, if not all 13 days \u2014 and they\u2019ve learned a lot over time.<\/p>\n

Here are useful tips to have a more easygoing time at the biggest, most crowded summer party in Central New York.<\/p>\n

Remember you don\u2019t have to see everything in one day. Have a plan for what you want to see when you arrive, so you don\u2019t end up walking in circles for hours.<\/p>\n

1. Go on a weekday<\/p>\n

On weekdays, you\u2019ll avoid the big weekend crowds, which means you\u2019ll avoid the big weekend traffic and big weekend lines. It\u2019s a no-brainer. We know going on a weekday won\u2019t work for everyone\u2019s schedule, especially weekday workers and students. But if you have the luxury to pick your day, we can\u2019t recommend it enough. <\/p>\n

Reporter Steve Featherstone\u2019s top tip is to bring Wet Wipes, or baby water wipes, to the fair.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t bring the whole brick,\u201d he said. \u201cJust bring a baggie of a few wet wipes and you\u2019ll thank me later. Ever try to get sugar off your hands after eating Pizze Fritte? Or off your kids and their little faces? Forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Plus, those will come in handy if you decide to eat a messy barbecue sandwich or cotton candy cocktail. It\u2019s the state fair \u2014 sometimes it\u2019s sticky! Come prepared.<\/p>\n

Never underestimate the good ol\u2019 bus. When it comes to high-traffic amphitheater concerts and the state fair, public transit is a great choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey skip all the traffic on I-690,\u201d said reporter Emily Kulkus. <\/p>\n

Those rides are cheap, fairly consistent and air-conditioned. Even if you miss one bus, there\u2019s another one coming few minutes behind it. And less car traffic on the highway makes everyone happy.<\/p>\n

4. Wear proper footwear<\/p>\n

The fairgrounds are huge and footwear matters. Add a stroll through the parking lots, a jaunt through the midway, food stops, bathroom runs and extra steps to find your family or friends before a concert, and you can easily wear out your flimsy sandals. And heels? Forget it.<\/p>\n

We recommend light, comfy footwear, like your everyday sneakers or flats with arch support. Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want anything heavy where you\u2019re clomping around,\u201d said photographer Dennis Nett. \u201cI put in over 12,000 steps out there yesterday. You want to make sure you\u2019re comfortable by the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

And watch where you step, especially in the cattle barn.<\/p>\n

Those hot summer days can feel extra warm when you\u2019re out on the fairgrounds pavement. Bring a portable fan or neck fan if you\u2019re someone who can\u2019t stand being hot. Wear a hat to keep sun off your face and use sunscreen. Find shady spots to cool off near the Horticulture Building, Haudenosaunee Village<\/a> and Chevy Court.<\/p>\n

Hydration is key. You can bring in empty water bottles to the fair, and many buildings have bottle filling stations. Look near the restrooms in the Center of Progress, Dairy Products Building and Horticulture Building and you\u2019ll see places to refill with cold water.<\/p>\n

This will sound weird, but it can be helpful to bring an empty tote bag if you\u2019re planning to shop, pick up free stuff or play games on the midway. If you win a small prize, put it in the bag. Stocking up on some freebies? Put them in the bag. Brought a Tupperware container or Ziplocs for any leftovers? Keep it in the bag. <\/p>\n

7. Floss like a boss<\/p>\n

You\u2019re excited to eat your big steak sandwich or street corn, until you\u2019re walking around afterward feeling gristle or kernel bits in your teeth for the next two hours. No, thank you. Bring floss or a flosser, then eat steak tips, chicken wings and sticky treats to your heart\u2019s content. <\/p>\n

Also? You don\u2019t need to individually stand in line for every food stand. If you\u2019re with friends, send one or two people to get orders for everyone from one long line, while someone else tackles a different line. Put one in charge of grabbing a table for the group. Work smart, not hard.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a cute pic for social, sure, but also a great safety practice. <\/p>\n

If your kiddo wanders off on the vast fairgrounds, they probably didn\u2019t go far. But if you don\u2019t find them right away, it\u2019s important to have helpful details if you need to ask security or state police for help.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the first thing state police ask for? What they were wearing,\u201d said reporter Emily Kulkus. \u201cThat\u2019s why I always took a photo of my kids right at the gate, just in case.\u201d<\/p>\n

Better still, have the kids wear bright colors so you can quickly spot them in a crowd, in a line or on a ride, and avoid a wander-off altogether.<\/p>\n

9. Photograph your parking spot<\/p>\n

Adults certainly get lost too.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say you didn\u2019t listen to us, and you drove your car to the fair instead of taking the bus. Now you\u2019re lost in Gray Lot 12, clicking your car key fob like a maniac. Hey, there\u2019s a better way. <\/p>\n

Take a picture of your parking spot, and the nearest parking lot number, and see if you can get the ferris wheel or another notable structure in the shot nearby. It\u2019ll give you helpful context later when you\u2019re trying to find your truck with a group of friends or sugar-high kids in tow.<\/p>\n
