Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband made at least $130 million in stock profits over the course of the California Democrat\u2019s 37 years in Congress \u2014 a staggering return of 16,930%.<\/p>\n
Pelosi, 85, announced this week she will retire<\/a> when her term ends in January 2027.<\/p>\n The San Francisco pol became famous as the first woman to wield the speaker\u2019s gavel, and infamous for her exceptional stock market returns<\/a>.<\/p>\n Pelosi was the first woman elected Speaker of the House in 2007. REUTERS<\/p>\n Before first taking Congressional office in 1987, the then-47-year-old freshman and her hubby, venture capitalist Paul Pelosi, reported between $610,000 and $785,000 in stocks in their portfolio, according to a copy of her \u201chand delivered\u201d 1987 financial disclosure form.<\/a><\/p>\n They held a dozen stocks, including CitiBank, and in many companies no longer publicly traded.<\/p>\n That portfolio has soared to $133.7 million today, according to the latest estimates from Quiver Quantitative<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Pelosi\u2019s wealth has skyrocketed during the California Dem\u2019s nearly four decades in Congress. Rob Jejenich \/ NY Post Design<\/p>\n That represents an eye-watering profit of 16,930% \u2014 compared to 2,300% for the Dow Jones over those years.<\/p>\n Even with the power of compound interest, the windfall represents a staggering 14.5% average annual return \u2014 beating out the S&P 500, NASDAQ and Dow Jones performances over those years, around 7% to 9%.<\/p>\n Last year, their investment portfolio\u00a0pulled in an estimated 54% return<\/a>, more than double the S&P 500\u2019s 25% gain \u2014 and beating every large hedge fund, according to numbers in\u00a0Bloomberg\u2019s end-of-year tally.<\/a><\/p>\n Pelosi\u2019s trading is so infamous it\u2019s inspired Congressional trading ban bills and ETFs named after her. Getty Images for The Recording Academy<\/p>\n Pelosi\u2019s 2024 financial disclosure<\/a> form shows holdings in some two dozen individual stocks, including millions in each of NVIDIA, Palo Alto Network, Salesforce, Netflix \u2013 and between $25 and $50 million of Apple stocks \u2013 their largest holding.<\/p>\n The Pelosis are worth an estimated $280 million today \u2013 compared to around $3 million when the Golden State lawmaker joined Congress.<\/p>\n They also have stakes in various other ventures, including a Napa Valley winery worth between $5 and 25 million, a Bay area Italian restaurant, commercial real estate and a political data and consulting firm.<\/p>\n Nancy Pelosi first ran for Congress in 1987 when she was 47 years old. The only reason why you make such trades is if you\u2019ve got a process that gives you confidence, and as far as I know, they\u2019re not buying off technicals. So, they must be doing it because of information around the companies themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n Weiskopf said Pelosi\u2019s trading style is marked by her prolific use of options trading.<\/p>\n \u201cYou only do that because you want leverage and you only really want leverage on that kind of trading if you have a lot of convictions,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s buying deep in the money and putting up a lot of money in doing it. . . . and we\u2019re not seeing her panic.
