HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) — Hundreds of people boarded buses in Harlem early Friday morning as demonstrators from New York and New Jersey headed to Washington, D.C., for a voting rights rally.<\/p>\n

Organizers say more than 50 buses from New York and New Jersey brought people to the Lincoln Memorial for the March on Washington – Defend the Vote rally.<\/p>\n

Demands for civil rights and the right to vote echoed across the Lincoln Memorial on Friday morning.<\/p>\n

The first ever March on Washington, themed Jobs and Freedom, drew about 250,000 people to the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963 and was the site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.<\/p>\n

While civil and voting rights advocates say we’ve come a long way, they say there is still much more that needs to be done.<\/p>\n

The rally comes amid an ongoing legal battle over the Trump administration’s efforts involving the U.S. Postal Service and mail-in voting.<\/p>\n

A federal judge ruled against the administration’s plan Thursday night, though the administration is expected to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a block on President Donald Trump’s executive order involving mail-in voting.<\/p>\n

The legal fight comes about a week before the first mail-in ballots are expected to be sent to voters ahead of the midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Local activists responding to Thursday night’s federal court decision said it is the Postal Service’s job to deliver ballots, not determine the rules governing elections.<\/p>\n

Voting rights advocates say Trump’s policy could disenfranchise voters by adding additional steps for them to vote by mail.<\/p>\n

Local marchers said they hope that Washington hears them loud and clear.<\/p>\n
