King Harald V of Norway<\/a> and Queen Sonja were married for 57 years, a love story that ended only with his death this week. To many people, the length of their marriage might seem like a given for a royal couple who spent decades on the throne together.<\/p>\n

But what fewer people know is how long they had to wait before they could even begin that life together, and what it cost them to get there. Nine years of secrecy, public pressure, and an ultimatum that threatened the future of the Norwegian monarchy. Their story was so dramatic it was recently the subject of a Nordic limited series in 2025, released on Prime Video as The Commoner<\/a>. It\u2019s not hard to see why so many people today, even all these years later, are so fascinated by their romance. Below, a brief look back at the remarkable true love story between King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway.<\/p>\n

They met at a party in 1959.<\/p>\n

Harald, then a Norwegian prince as his father Olav V sat on the throne, first crossed paths with the young Sonja Haraldsen in 1959 at a dinner party in Oslo<\/a> hosted by a mutual friend. Harald was a cadet at the Norwegian Military Academy at the time. Sonja, the daughter of a clothing merchant, was studying French, English, and art history<\/a> at the University of Oslo. She had also studied accounting and fashion design at a prominent finishing school in Switzerland. By all accounts<\/a>, it was love at first sight. Harald invited Sonja to his military graduation ball<\/a> that August, where they were photographed together for the first time.<\/p>\n

Their relationship had to be kept secret.<\/p>\n

The problem was immediately apparent. The Norwegian constitution wouldn\u2019t be updated to institute full primogeniture to the Norwegian throne (meaning allow a woman to inherit) until 1990. Although Harald had two older sisters, Princess Ragnhild and Princess Astrid, as the only boy to Olav and his late wife, Princess M\u00e4rtha, he was the sole heir at the time. Thus, his father expected him to marry a woman of noble birth.<\/p>\n

Sonja, however, being the daughter of a merchant, was considered a commoner. That made their relationship in the 1950s and 1960s still largely controversial in royal and aristocratic circles<\/a>. So the couple kept their romance largely hidden for years, meeting quietly at Sonja\u2019s family home<\/a> in the Vinderen neighborhood of Oslo, where her mother Dagny was supportive of the relationship. In 1964, as rumors began to surface in the Norwegian press, the palace actually went so far<\/a> as to issue a statement insisting that Crown Prince Harald would not be marrying a commoner.<\/p>\n

Harald issued his father an ultimatum.<\/p>\n

The years of waiting wore on both of them, and the couple reportedly<\/a> broke up and reconciled multiple times under the pressure. In 1965, following his 30th birthday, Harald reached a breaking point and told his father plainly: either he would be permitted to marry Sonja, or he would never marry at all.<\/p>\n

King Olav was forced to consult with the Norwegian government. The year 1968 saw a worldwide escalation of international crises; in Norway, it was a constitutional crisis. Since Harald was the only person in Norway\u2019s line of succession, remaining unmarried would have effectively ended the reign of his family and potentially the Norwegian monarchy altogether. The Storting, Norway\u2019s parliament, said they could not formally approve the match but would not publicly oppose it if the king gave his blessing. \u201cWe just kept waiting and hoping they\u2019d all finally back down,\u201d Harald told Norway\u2019s national broadcaster NRK<\/a> many years later. And eventually, they did.<\/p>\n

On March 18, 1968, King Olav announced the engagement in a statement<\/a> to the Storting: \u201cIt is with pleasure that I inform you, Mr President and Members of the Storting, that I, after seeking advice from the Prime Minister, members of the Government, you, Mr President, and the parliamentary leaders of the political parties, have today given my consent to my dear son, Crown Prince Harald, to take as his wife Miss Sonja Haraldsen, daughter of the late Mr Karl August Haraldsen and Mrs Dagny Haraldsen n\u00e9e Ulrichsen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the announcement, flags were flown from public buildings across the country in celebration. Harald presented Sonja with a diamond and ruby ring that had belonged to his late mother, Princess M\u00e4rtha. It would be the same engagement ring that their son<\/a>, Crown Prince Haakon, would present to his fianc\u00e9e Mette-Marit Tjessem H\u00f8iby in 2000<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a touching gesture, King Olav walked Sonja down the aisle at their wedding on August 29, 1968, at Oslo Cathedral, as her own father had died in 1959. The cathedral was decorated with more than 2,500 flowers, and 850 guests attended the ceremony. The bride also bucked royal tradition, opting for a crown of flowers<\/a> rather than a tiara to pin down her tulle veil. Her dress, while impeccably tailored, was also not made by a royal dressmaker but rather bought from the Norwegian department store Molstad.<\/p>\n

Upon becoming the new Crown Princess of Norway, Sonja also succeeded her sister-in-law Princess Astrid as the First Lady of Norway. Princess Astrid held the position as her mother died before her father took the throne, and her older sister Princess Ragnhild moved to Brazil shortly after marriage in 1953.<\/p>\n

Harald and Sonja had two children, Princess M\u00e4rtha Louise<\/a>, born in 1971, and Crown Prince Haakon<\/a>, born in 1973. When King Olav died on January 17, 1991, Harald and Sonja became King and Queen of Norway, with Sonja becoming the country\u2019s first queen consort in 52 years. Norwegian monarchs have consecrations, rather than coronations, more solemn ceremonies following the previous sovereign\u2019s funeral. The couple were consecrated together at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim that June and conducted a 10-day tour of southern Norway to mark the beginning of their reign.<\/p>\n

Harald and Sonja marked their golden wedding anniversary in 2018, 50 years after their August 1968 wedding. Despite a series of health challenges in recent years, including multiple hospitalizations for both of them, the couple appeared to have remained inseparable. Queen Sonja survives her husband of 57 years.<\/p>\n
