From the moment the music started, Sean Paul wasted little time reminding the Syracuse crowd just how many recognizable songs he has collected throughout his career.

Sean kicked off the night with “Get Busy,” immediately setting the tone for a night that rarely slowed down. The 2003 hit had fans singing along from the opening minutes with Paul making his way to each side of the stage, backed by his band and dancers.

Rather than saving all of his biggest songs for the end of the night, Sean continued firing them off early. “Ever Blazin’” followed by the familiar opening of Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” brought a huge response from the crowd. He frequently kept the fans engaged throughout the night, telling the crowd “When I say Sean you say Paul.” His set continued with Beyonce’s “Baby Boy,” another song that helped establish him as a name well beyond the dance scene. Released in 2003, the collaboration became one of the defining pop hits of the era, and hearing it live more than twenty years later showed just how well Paul’s music has aged.

That crossover success became one of the themes of the night. Throughout his career, Sean Paul has managed to bring Jamaican dance into mainstream pop without leaving behind the sound that made him well known in the first place. Paul’s success over the years earned him plenty of recognition beyond the charts. He won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for “Dutty Rock” in 2004 and has earned several more Grammy nominations throughout his career. He has also picked up awards from the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards and MTV along the way. His set at Suburban Park reflected both sides of his career, bouncing between his own records and the collaborations that have made his unmistakable voice recognizable around the world.

“Give It Up To Me,” and “Got 2 Luv U” continued the set that played almost like a soundtrack to the past twenty five years of clubs, parties, and summer playlists. Even young fans who may not have realized how extensive Sean’s catalog was could seemingly recognize song after song.

That familiarity was one of the night’s biggest strengths. Paul didn’t need lengthy introductions or crazy production changes to keep the crowd engaged. In most cases, the opening beat was enough. Hands went in the air, fans were waving Jamaican towels, and thousands of voices joined in as one recognizable chorus after another roared through the fairgrounds.

As the show moved deeper into the night, the collection of hits continued to build toward the songs that many in attendance had been waiting to hear. Tracks like “Gimme The Light,” “We Be Burnin’,” and “She Doesn’t Mind” represented different stages of Sean’s career while keeping the same high energy dance pulse running through the show. More and more fans seemed to pack into Suburban Park as the night progressed. Fairgoers just passing by the Midway area swarmed in to see what all the hype was about, and they couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.

The song that everyone had been waiting for was finally here. The opening beat of “Temperature” soared through the park and instantly brought another surge of energy from the crowd. Hands shot in the air, and people danced wherever they could find room. Even after an entire set built around high- energy hits, “Temperature” managed to pull something extra out of the crowd, creating one of the loudest and most energetic moments of the night. Sean fed off the response, moving across the stage while his dancers kept the energy high beside him, turning the familiar hit into a full blown party across the Fairgrounds.

By the time the final moments arrived, Paul had given the fair crowd exactly what they came for. It was a night driven by nostalgia, nonstop movement, and songs that still had thousands of people singing along years after their release. With Suburban Park packed and the crowd still buzzing, Sean Paul proved there was still plenty of “Temperature” Left in Syracuse.

Suburban Park concerts at The Great New York State Fair continue with Melissa Etheridge on Friday, August 28.
