<\/p>\nBRONX, New York (WABC) — Two dogs are receiving emergency medical care after they were found living in deplorable conditions in the basement of a Bronx apartment building, according to NYC Second Chance Rescue.<\/p>\n
The dogs were discovered in the basement of a building on Fox Street, where the rescue organization said they had been living surrounded by their own urine and feces.<\/p>\n
NYC Second Chance Rescue said a new superintendent at the building discovered the two male dogs and reached out for help.<\/p>\n
Photos shared by the rescue show the dogs with severely matted fur. The organization said the animals were suffering from severe neglect, including open sores, infections, fleas and maggots.<\/p>\n

One of the dogs was so severely matted that maggots had gotten underneath its fur and into its skin, according to the rescue.<\/p>\n
It is unclear how long the dogs had been living in the basement.<\/p>\n
The rescue said it was told that the building’s previous superintendent became terminally ill and left the dogs behind after leaving the area.<\/p>\n
Both dogs were removed from the basement and taken for emergency veterinary care.<\/p>\n
NYC Second Chance Rescue is now raising money to help cover the cost of their medical treatment.<\/p>\n
