In 2024, six people died due to battery fires, while only one person was killed in a lithium-ion battery fire in 2025.

While fatal fires remain low, Flynn said the number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries have still increased about 70% this year.

FDNY Chief Fire Marshal Michael Kavanagh noted at a press conference in July that an increasing amount of battery-related fires are happening outdoors, with 137 non-structural fires in 2026 as compared to 48 at this time last year.

“The biggest change is where we’re seeing these fires happening,” said Kavanagh. “These non-structural fires are occurring outside of buildings, businesses and homes. That’s driving the overall increase in incidents.”

An 18-year-old boy died as a fire sparked by a lithium-ion battery tore through a Brooklyn apartment, FDNY…

[36
125207,102681,41666,125206,98,100,99,99140,194,125201,81993,125204,125200,125202,125205,9,24,63,125203,122
post-332826","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brooklyn","tag-172nd-st","tag-18-year-old","tag-41666","tag-91st-ave","tag-brooklyn","tag-brooklyn-headlines","tag-brooklyn-news","tag-daniel-flynn","tag-fdny","tag-fdny-fire-marshals","tag-flynn","tag-intefaith-medical-center","tag-kavanagh","tag-michael-kavanagh","tag-nassau-county-medical-center","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-nychas-albany-houses","tag-queens
["GET
