It\u2019s always 1993 at this 4 train stop on Jerome Avenue in the Bronx. That\u2019s where an above-ground station still sports a pay phone on the mezzanine level.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the phone is in decent condition. The cord hasn\u2019t been ripped from the wall, the coin slot was free of debris, and the area surrounding the phone was relatively clean.<\/p>\n

The phone poses a mystery. The price of a call is 50 cents, so says to a sticker on the phone. That rate was established in 2001, according to a CNN article<\/a>, a fifteen-cent hike from the previous rate of 35 cents.<\/p>\n

Was the MTA really still installing pay phones on subway platforms at the dawn of the 21st century? Not everyone had a cell phone back then, but that certainly seemed to be the way communication was headed.<\/p>\n

A New York Times<\/a> story from 2022 looked back on the long history of pay phones in New York, noting that an effort to remove the last street-level pay phones in the city had just been completed.<\/p>\n

This one isn\u2019t technically street level, and I can\u2019t recall which stop it\u2019s part of (Mt. Eden or 176th Street, I believe). But whoever was tasked with taking them down missed it. <\/p>\n

A subway payphone is a true relic.
