The cord hasn’t been ripped from the wall, the coin slot was free of debris, and the area surrounding the phone was relatively clean.

The phone poses a mystery. The price of a call is 50 cents, so says to a sticker on the phone. That rate was established in 2001, according to a CNN article, a fifteen-cent hike from the previous rate of 35 cents.

Was the MTA really still installing pay phones on subway platforms at the dawn of the 21st century? Not everyone had a cell phone back then, but that certainly seemed to be the way communication was headed.

A New York Times story from 2022 looked back on the long history of pay phones in New York, noting that an effort to remove the last street-level pay phones in the city had just been completed.

This one isn’t technically street level, and I can’t recall which stop it’s part of (Mt.
