But beginning September 14, city dwellers can turn their attention to a considerably more lucrative target: a treasure chest containing $25,000.

The New York Treasure Hunt is returning with a new citywide quest created by the mysterious Captain Mortimer, a self-described pirate, gamemaster and “foremost adversary.” Over 12 days, participants will attempt to solve 12 clues scattered across the five boroughs, decode a cipher and become the first person (or crew) to reach the hidden cash.

Each clue is a complex riddle tied to a specific location in New York City, generally one with historical or cultural significance. Hunters will need to visit the sites in person, investigate details and arrive at a numerical answer. The clues can be solved independently, although players must complete them in order to unlock more.

View this post on Instagram

Once all 12 have been solved, participants gain access to “The Key,” another riddle that reveals how to translate the final coded message. That cipher points to the treasure chest’s exact location and, presumably, the most satisfying X in New York City.

The first three clues are free, but officially entering the competition costs $25 and unlocks the complete hunt. Clues will be released periodically according to an undisclosed schedule and players get two attempts per clue each day. The hunt is open only to U.S. residents ages 18 and older.

Captain Mortimer is also very clear that this is not an invitation to unleash your inner subway pirate. The treasure is hidden, not buried, so leave the shovels at home. Hunters will not be asked to trespass, climb, swim, vandalize property, disturb businesses or enter anywhere dangerous. The entire quest takes place within the five boroughs and organizers say participation should cost nothing beyond the entry fee and subway fares.

Those hoping to outsource the brainwork should temper their expectations: One rule simply reads, “Good luck trying to use AI.” (The captain also insists the hunt is deliberately difficult, but still solvable.)

Only one hunter or team can claim the $25,000 prize and organizers will announce when the chest has been found before publishing the solutions.
