Heading to a dentist appointment in a Staten Island downpour sounds like the setup to a bad joke. For Thomas Fahmy, it nearly became something far worse. On August 27, 2026, the congressional staffer stepped out into a thunderstorm near Todt Hill Road, umbrella raised, car roughly 20 feet away — and a lightning bolt dropped him flat onto wet pavement in a single blinding flash. A neighbor’s home security systems doorbell camera caught every second. The footage is now circling the globe, and the camera didn’t even flinch.

Struck and Standing: What the Footage Shows

The doorbell recording reveals a harrowing sequence that unfolds faster than any bystander could have processed.

One frame: a man walking. Next frame: white light, then a body on the ground. Reports differ on whether the lightning hit Fahmy’s umbrella, his foot, or both — and the exact path of the current remains unclear. Seconds later, the footage shows him staggering upright and moving toward a nearby residence. Stephanie Homan heard him screaming and called emergency services, according to Newser. Fahmy was transported to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital and released the following day with no major injuries and no visible burns.

Walking away from a direct lightning strike belongs in the statistical long tail of human survival.

“It felt like walking on balloons,” Fahmy told ABC News, describing full-body numbness, intense tingling, and severe pain in both feet. He’s described feeling “blessed” to be alive — and the medical outcome backs that up.

The Gadget That Didn’t Blink

A consumer doorbell camera — not a news crew — produced the footage the entire world is now watching.

No brand has been confirmed, but the best cameras you can buy for every budget are almost certainly what powers a mainstream connected doorbell like this: wide-angle lens, cloud-backed storage, shareable within minutes of the event. It kept recording through heavy rain and an intense electromagnetic discharge without apparent failure. That’s the part worth sitting with.

Unlike a phone camera — which requires a human to notice something, unlock the screen, and press record — a doorbell camera just watches. Always. It’s the surveillance equivalent of leaving Slack running in the background: unattended, unremarkable, until suddenly it’s the only witness that matters. The same pattern plays out with dashcam footage and bodycam recordings; consumer hardware keeps quietly expanding what the public can actually see when something extraordinary happens. This dynamic mirrors what we’ve seen with the rise of the surveillance app — recording tools reshaping what’s visible in everyday life.

The clip spread widely online and into broadcast packages in Brazil, Europe, and beyond. One doorstep camera. Worldwide reach.

If your front door has a doorbell camera, it may be recording right now — and nobody can predict what it’s quietly waiting to document.

[39
126063,9,24,63,134,136,135,126698,126697
post-337351","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-staten-island","tag-fahmy","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-staten-island","tag-staten-island-headlines","tag-staten-island-news","tag-stephanie-homan","tag-stephanie-homan-footage
["GET
