A New York state law is changing what aspiring cosmetologists must learn in the classroom.<\/p>\n
Beginning Tuesday, cosmetology students are required to receive training on working with a wider range of hair types and textures as part of the state\u2019s 1,000-hour cosmetology curriculum.<\/p>\n
At Valley Stream Central High School, cosmetology instructor Karen Glasgow says the change reflects skills her students have been eager to learn.<\/p>\n
Glasgow says students have repeatedly asked when they would learn techniques such as braiding, styling and cutting natural hair.<\/p>\n
For Long Islanders, the issue extends beyond the classroom. Some customers say finding a salon that can work with their specific hair texture can be a challenge.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019re having to turn away people because you can\u2019t work with their certain hair texture, it could cost you business,\u201d said Jordan Black, of Rosedale. \u201cIt\u2019s good that you should be trained to work with all different kinds because not everybody looks the same.\u201d<\/p>\n
Others say the expanded training is a step toward greater diversity and inclusion in the beauty industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore diversity is definitely a good thing,\u201d said Jonathan Eugene, of Valley Stream. \u201cIt took a while, and this is just a small step, but definitely headed in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n
Glasgow is preparing to open her classroom doors Wednesday, when she says she is excited to begin teaching the updated curriculum and help ensure every client can find a cosmetologist equipped to meet their needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A New York state law is changing what aspiring cosmetologists must learn in the classroom.
