PENSACOLA, Fla. \u2014 Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has called on the Pensacola City Council to cancel a drag show planned at the Saenger Theatre just two days before Christmas, citing worries about its content.<\/p>\n
Uthmeier describes the event, titled \u2018A Drag Queen Christmas,\u2019 as ridiculing Christian traditions and part of a \u2018Naughty Tour\u2019 that supposedly undermines the holiday spirit. <\/p>\n
In his letter to the council, he highlights the city\u2019s contractual right to cancel the show, which he condemns as \u2018obscene\u2019 and \u2018anti-religious.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile the First Amendment safeguards freedom of expression, it does not require a city to platform and endorse disgusting, obscene content that denigrates its residents\u2019 religious beliefs,\u201d Uthmeier stated in his letter.<\/p>\n
Uthmeier\u2019s letter references the contract between the city and Legends Global, the event\u2019s management company, implying that the city has the right to cancel the show for several reasons. He claims that the performance threatens community values and ridicules sacred Christian traditions.<\/p>\n
City officials have acknowledged Uthmeier\u2019s concerns but have not made a public statement regarding a cancellation of the event.<\/p>\n
