{"id":338875,"date":"2026-09-05T16:18:50","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T16:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/338875\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T16:18:50","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T16:18:50","slug":"new-york-renters-want-to-move-to-philly-and-vice-versa-zillow-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/338875\/","title":{"rendered":"New York renters want to move to Philly and vice versa, Zillow says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Renters in New York are looking to come to Philly and vice versa, according to an analysis of rental search trends in 50 metropolitan areas by <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/\">Zillow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Philadelphia metro area\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/research\/rent-search-trends-2026-36665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/research\/rent-search-trends-2026-36665\/\">top out-of-town market<\/a> for rental searches was the New York area, as of July. And the New York area\u2019s top out-of-town market for rental searches was the Philadelphia region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Slightly more than 7% of views on rental listings in the Philadelphia area came from people in the New York metro. In the New York area, which was the market most driven by local searches, 1.6% of views came from residents of the Philadelphia region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Philadelphia area has long been a <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/real-estate\/housing\/apartment-for-rent-philadelphia-new-york-relocate-20251124.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/real-estate\/housing\/apartment-for-rent-philadelphia-new-york-relocate-20251124.html\">destination for New Yorkers<\/a> looking for relatively more affordable homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Overall, two in five views for a rental in the Philadelphia area came from outside the region. Most searches \u2014 the other roughly 61% \u2014 came from locals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In the Philadelphia area, the percentage of rental listing views from out of town grew slightly \u2014 by 0.6 percentage points \u2014 from last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Shares of out-of-town rental searches grew the most \u2014 a few percentage points \u2014 in the Buffalo, Chicago, and Houston metro areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cRenting is often how people try out a new community before committing,\u201d Mischa Fisher, chief economist at Zillow, said in a statement. \u201cWhen we see a market with a growing share of rental searches coming from outside the metro, that tips us off to a developing pipeline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In hot spots such as Raleigh, N.C.; Hartford, Conn.; and New Orleans; out-of-town rental hunters outnumber locals searching on Zillow. These places have been destinations for people living in coastal metros with higher costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In the New York metro, more than three in four views on rental listings came from locals. Rental markets in the Los Angeles and Chicago areas also are mostly driven by locals.
