Roger Goodell isn’t going anywhere.

The NFL commissioner reached agreement on a four-year extension through the 2030 season on Sunday, the league announced, which will extend his tenure at the helm of the league to 24 years.

Robert Kraft, the chairman of the NFL’s compensation committee, sent a memo on Sunday announcing the extension, which was obtained by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“As members of the compensation committee, we’re pleased to announce that we have reached agreement with Roger to remain as commissioner through the 2030 league season, ending on March 31, 2031,” Kraft wrote.

“Throughout the negotiation process, the committee has worked closely with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a deal that aligns Roger’s compensation with the league’s long-term interests and success. To that end, the agreement is heavily performance-based, with more than 95% of the total competnsation tied to Roger and the NFL’s performance measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the compensation committee.

“We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years.”

Goodell, 67, will be almost 72 at the deal’s conclusion.

He took over for Paul Tagliabue in 2006 and has been hugely successful in growing the league into a behemoth, while hitting controversy in his handling of disciplinary issues and concussions.

Those issues, however, are largely in the past. Today, under Goodell’s tutelage, the NFL is perhaps the most successful — or at least the most popular — institution in American society.

The league’s earnings — $23 billion in revenue for the fiscal year ending in March 2025 — and its media rights deals worth over $110 billion are what Goodell can hang his hat on now.

So too is the ever-growing international presence of the NFL, which will play nine games overseas this year including the Rams-49ers opener in Melbourne, Australia.

Goodell’s new contract will presumably allow him to negotiate the next collective bargaining agreement, having been in charge for the last two. The CBA is set to expire after the 2030 season, but negotiations are expected to take place well before then.

Roger Goodell isn’t going anywhere.
