Schulz and the characters he created. Visitors can see never-before-seen looks made for Snoopy and Woodstock dolls alongside artifacts connecting Schulz to New York City, tennis and his friendship with Billie Jean King.

The exhibition arrives during a particularly fitting stretch of the New York calendar, opening around Fashion Week and the US Open while drawing extensively from Peanuts’ longstanding relationships with both fashion and sports.

Curated by The Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, ‘Snoopy in Style NYC’ approaches Peanuts as more than a comic-strip phenomenon. Instead, the exhibition looks at the ways Schulz’s work crossed into clothing, design, music, athletics and broader popular culture.

Fashion is one of the largest parts of the show.

A wide range of contemporary brands and designers created custom pieces for Snoopy and Woodstock plush dolls, with participants including adidas, American Eagle, AREA, ASHLYN, BODE, Chinatown Market, Christopher John Rogers, Coach, Collina Strada, Daveed Baptiste, GAPStudio designed by Zac Posen, Gelato Pique, Hotel Olympia, Jeff Hamilton, Kith, Levi’s, LUAR, L/UNIFORM, Madhappy, Michael Kors Collection, New York or Nowhere, Omega, Public School New York, Robert Wun, Sandy Liang, STAPLE, Tanner Fletcher, threeASFOUR, TIER, Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch, Willy Chavarria and ZANKOV.

The idea of dressing Peanuts characters in designer fashion is not new. Similar exhibitions were mounted while Schulz was still alive, including a 1990 presentation at the Louvre in Paris featuring fashion houses such as Chanel, Hermès, Dior, Armani and Givenchy.

That history makes the New York exhibition less of a one-off collaboration and more of a continuation of a relationship between Peanuts and fashion that has stretched across decades.

Style was present inside the strip itself, too. Charlie Brown’s zigzag shirt became one of the most recognizable pieces of clothing in comics, while characters including Lucy and Sally saw their wardrobes change as fashion and social norms shifted. In the 1970s, Schulz began drawing some of the female characters in pants rather than dresses to reflect changing times.

“Sparky understood that characters, like people, had a distinct sense of style,” says Jean Schulz, Charles Schulz’s widow and president of the board at the Charles M. Schulz Museum. “When you saw that style, you would understand something deeper about them. Sparky himself appreciated people’s personal style.”

The exhibition also looks closely at Schulz’s relationship with sports, particularly tennis.

Visitors can explore how tennis entered both his personal life and the Peanuts comic strip, along with his friendship with Billie Jean King and his advocacy for Title IX and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Those connections sit alongside a broader examination of how Schulz portrayed girls and women in Peanuts. Lucy, Peppermint Patty, Marcie and Sally were written as confident, athletic and intelligent characters at a time when female roles in popular culture were often more restricted.

That connection between Peanuts and changing ideas about gender gives the sports section of the exhibition a larger cultural dimension. Tennis becomes a pathway into Schulz’s friendships, interests and support for women’s athletics, while the characters themselves show how those ideas appeared in the strip.

Music gets its own major showcase through ‘Joe Cool’s Listening Lounge.’

The immersive space celebrates Snoopy’s sunglasses-wearing alter ego while also looking at the musical history attached to Peanuts. A DJ booth, record display, rare albums, archival material and music-inspired merchandise fill the lounge, with particular attention paid to Vince Guaraldi’s jazz compositions.

Guaraldi’s music became inseparable from the sound of Peanuts television specials, and the listening lounge places that musical legacy alongside the visual identity of Joe Cool.

The result is a section that connects two enduring elements of Snoopy’s cultural life: his ability to transform into different personas and the jazz soundtrack that became part of how generations experienced Peanuts onscreen.

Retail is woven into the exhibition as well.

Sarah Andelman, founder of influential Paris boutique colette and the consultancy Just an Idea, has curated the exhibition gift shop. The selection includes Peanuts merchandise from Aurora, Chinatown Market, C.O. Bigelow, Courting Tennis, Hotel Olympia, Inciardi Prints, Leblon Delienne, LeSportsac, L/UNIFORM, Pintrill, Sugarfina and Whatever! Makes You Happy, among others.

Moleskine is also bringing a Hot Stamp Cart to the exhibition, allowing visitors to purchase ‘Snoopy in Style’ notebooks and have them embossed with custom character artwork.

Starbucks is participating through a display of its Snoopy Glass Cold Cup, a design inspired by the company’s Glass Bearista Cold Cup. The installation highlights the ongoing global collaboration between Starbucks and Peanuts.

All of those partnerships sit within a much longer history.

Peanuts first appeared in 1950, introducing Charlie Brown, Snoopy and a cast of characters that would ultimately extend far beyond the newspaper comics. Over the decades, the brand has moved through television specials, merchandise, theme parks, exhibitions, digital media and countless collaborations.

Peanuts recently marked its 75th anniversary with exhibitions and events around the world, and ‘Snoopy in Style NYC’ continues that expansion by looking specifically at how the characters became embedded in fashion, music and sports culture.

At the centre of the exhibition, however, remains Schulz’s understanding that seemingly simple characters could carry surprisingly rich identities.

Snoopy could become Joe Cool, a World War I Flying Ace or a novelist. Peppermint Patty could bring sports and competition into the strip. Lucy’s personality could be communicated before she even spoke. Their clothing, interests, postures and recurring personas became part of who they were.

‘Snoopy in Style NYC’ takes those qualities and places them alongside the designers, athletes and musicians who helped carry Peanuts into new generations.

The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through September 26 at 25 Little West 12th Street in New York City.

Snoopy is taking over New York’s Meatpacking District with ‘Snoopy in Style NYC,’ a sprawling cultural exhibition that…

[8
12424,24330,127511,13272,127512,127513,113074,114558,22865,127514,127515,9,24,55,54,56,106155,127516,124301,126205,14094,47887,57388,127517,50675
post-339679","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-city","tag-adidas","tag-billie-jean-king","tag-charles-m-schulz","tag-coach","tag-gapstudio","tag-joe-cool","tag-kith","tag-levis","tag-meatpacking-district","tag-michael-kors-collection","tag-moleskine","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-new-york-city-headlines","tag-new-york-city-news","tag-ny","tag-peanuts","tag-sarah-andelman","tag-snoopy","tag-snoopy-in-style-nyc","tag-starbucks","tag-tommy-hilfiger","tag-tory-burch","tag-vince-guaraldi","tag-woodstock
["GET
