Police located it at a shopping plaza, where they say its occupants were attempting to steal additional cooking oil from a different business.

Officers stopped the truck and arrested its two occupants following an investigation. Inside the vehicle, police said they found a large polyethylene liquid storage tank, buckets, hoses, various masks, and more than $10,000 in cash.

Police identified the men as 26-year-old Leonel Ramirez-Savinon and 29-year-old Jeyson Santiago, both from Yonkers, New York. Investigators now suspect the same truck may be connected to multiple cooking oil thefts along the Interstate 91 corridor.

Police Say Used Cooking Oil Is Worth Stealing

Both men were charged with conspiracy to commit larceny in the fourth degree and criminal attempt to commit larceny in the fourth degree. Ramirez-Savinon was additionally charged with interfering with an officer, while Santiago faces traffic-related charges for traffic control signals and improper turns.

As strange as stealing somebody else’s old fryer oil might sound, Enfield Police noted that used cooking oil actually has monetary value. Its theft can leave businesses dealing with lost revenue, property damage, and cleanup expenses, meaning the consequences can extend well beyond an unexpectedly empty grease container.

The arrests also came because police recognized a truck they say had already been used in a previous cooking oil theft in Enfield. Returning to the same town in the same white box truck was, at the very least, not enough to keep it off law enforcement’s radar.

Comments and Reactions to the Enfield Cooking Oil Arrests

Commenters had about as much fun with the unusual target as one might expect, with one declaring the story material for the “next episode of Weird Crimes.” Another skipped straight to the obvious pun and dubbed the suspects “greasy thieves.”

Others were more surprised to learn that used cooking oil could be valuable enough to attract thieves at all. One commenter said they knew it could be sold but never imagined people would travel from Westchester to Connecticut specifically to steal it, while another recalled a similar theft happening in Meriden several years ago.

Then there was the fact that police say the same truck connected to an earlier theft returned to Enfield, which didn’t exactly impress everyone with the operation’s subtlety. One commenter summed that part up simply by saying, “They thought they were slick.”

If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don’t miss what’s coming next.

There are plenty of things you might expect someone to drive from New York to Connecticut to steal,…

[6
57527,23406,128066,128065,9,11,10,49,51,50,3048
post-341169","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york","tag-box-truck","tag-cooking-oil","tag-enfield-police","tag-enfield-police-department","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-headlines","tag-new-york-news","tag-new-york-state","tag-new-york-state-headlines","tag-new-york-state-news","tag-yonkers
["GET
