Senate bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CLIFDXWRPFA7DATT5BIXURCTEE\">THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE CAMPAIGN SIGNS: This is part of a special series taking a closer look at some of the new and lesser-known faces seeking public office on Staten Island in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZZ7FNR2D25E7JAFFSGJRVNQBGA\">**<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P2TXV5VXVBFZJAZOMOLNHESJLM\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Alexis Rodriguez has spent more than a decade helping young students in the classroom. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VBG4IMLPHZCL3LTVVKPTK5J5N4\">Now, the Midland Beach educator says she is ready to take on a new class: the New York state Legislature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"26CFES27GNF3FG2EB4KWOTCXLI\">Rodriguez, who moved to Staten Island from Brooklyn at the age of 4, is a Democrat challenging incumbent Republican state Sen. Andrew Lanza in the 24th District.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MLOSAGUSPNEMFA2MBNSWVNQVNI\">\u201cThis is where the teaching comes in. Wrangling 8-year-olds, you learn to negotiate and compromise, but also love, and I think that\u2019s the most important,\u201d Rodriguez, 38, said in an interview with the Advance\/SILive.com. \u201cI have a lot of experience in bringing people together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UOYNAYIT6RDDTHGZ3GEKIF7LNI\">It could seem intimidating to challenge for a seat that has been under Republican control for decades, but after years in the classroom and an ancestry of loss and strength, Rodriguez doesn\u2019t flinch.<\/p>\n<p>Cuban refugees<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MKFDUTNO4JHYVKPPHYAKTZ723Q\">Rodriguez\u2019s American story started out thousands of miles from Staten Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZHAQ2AOK5RAGDAZ3AV5AFFEMCI\">\u201cMy grandmother liked to say that she discovered America in 1967, and she did, and she came here alone with her two children,\u201d Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TFVPJ65YHZCE5JJVDRSYYR73LI\">Rodriguez\u2019s grandmother was one of the 270,000 Cuban refugees on the Freedom Flights, the largest and longest refugee resettlement effort in U.S. history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DNZHSQ5HZZFRRLXPI2VWOMULKY\">The historic flights, which followed the Bay of Pigs invasion in April 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, began on Dec. 1, 1965, and lasted eight years, bringing families with children from Varadero, Cuba, to Miami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4IKCT6Z5GFHGXBMGDYMOQP2M4I\">Rodriguez\u2019s grandmother, traveling with her two young children, arrived in 1967 and was relocated to a refugee camp in New Orleans, leaving her husband and the children\u2019s father, who was unable to secure a seat on the flight, back in Cuba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LZDGMCKPZJA57DUL2E5RBFMS3U\">\u201cShe was the pioneer, and she\u2019s an incredible human being&#8230; she ironed clothes for the first year until my grandfather was able to join,\u201d she said. \u201cThen they both relocated to Brooklyn, where they built their lives together, and I heard about it all the time&#8230; what they had, then what they lost, and then how hard it is and you have to work for opportunity, and education is the conduit for that opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Staten Island teacher trades classroom for campaign in Senate bid\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IRPQAFXQXJDFHFEEGLRVB6THBE.JPG\"  \/>Alexis Rodriguez pulls up at the Advance\/SILive.com&#8217;s Bloomfield offices in a custom-designed truck. (Advance\/SILive.com|Jan Somma-Hammel)Career path<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RFIKSDP5Z5DTTC7AWEJJKI3VXM\">That work ethic and confidence carried through to Rodriguez, leading her to pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree in economics at St. John\u2019s University and working for Standard &amp; Poor\u2019s, a leading financial services company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IGCNL5SS5NGSFKF7HPT7EEBQGE\">\u201cWorking on Wall Street taught me how money moves, and one of our clients was the teachers\u2019 retirement system, among many, many others,\u201d she said. \u201cI have a very deep understanding of how pensions are built and how they stay afloat, but I also see how families are directly impacted when money works for them and when money doesn\u2019t work for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WDYI75SU5RBGJLEOKMPFYTAEOM\">Rodriguez was happy and thriving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UEDGTRQDGZFCZACAGZQNDQAJAY\">Everything changed, however, when a childhood friend died at the age of 22, due to Staten Island\u2019s opioid epidemic, which was at its peak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3O3DJVTCRBHVFIQ3X2O4G7HZZ4\">\u201cI realized that we are not invincible, and had a new outlook on life. And what I was doing in a cubicle for 50 weeks a year wasn\u2019t what I wanted to stay doing, so I left,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7Z55HWWY7BFQXHVF7PRFQRXHHI\">Rodriguez pivoted to education, with the goal of making a difference in her students\u2019 lives. She started her new career path at Brooklyn College, where she earned a master\u2019s degree in childhood mathematics, before switching to English as a second language studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S7KDZ2SONJHZXILKGAWY44QHMQ\">\u201cI thought I would teach math because my background was economics, but upon starting in the school system, I was exposed to the ESL teaching and students,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo then I went back to school and got a scholarship with St. John\u2019s again&#8230; and I received a postgraduate degree for teaching English to students of other languages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5WBQYPYKLVF6DAJOJWTRGJEZ7E\">Rodriguez speaks three languages \u2014 English, Spanish and Italian, which have been valuable resources in her profession and led her to a position at PS 13 in Rosebank in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GUX5OJLQF5A4FDWY5AYEDWZJSE\">These days, Rodriguez works to inspire her \u201cmunchkins\u201d to work hard and stay determined, a lesson she learned from her family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5FWEOAYSRRDDHNKM4TPBPQZM2I\">\u201cMy dad used to say in school, \u2018Work hard now so that you don\u2019t have to work hard later,\u2019 and I share that with my students all the time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Entry into politics<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TH4Q5WIDWZEHBDAEACTY7WS7DA\">After years in the Department of Education, Rodriguez became increasingly interested in political issues, utilizing her economics background to fuel her understanding of this new world. One of the things she consistently noticed was how Albany politics were impacting her co-workers, young students and their families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BT4TYRH4ZZAD5PCCLHOWF6WSXU\">She was at a holiday party when her true inspiration \u2014 time \u2014 hit her in the face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L4KILZSWCNFPVOK2VDVGG3EYBY\">\u201cThere were two older gentlemen in front of me, and one of them turned to the other and said, \u2018I almost ran for office.\u2019 And then the other gentleman said to him, \u2018You know me too, but we don\u2019t have energy for that anymore,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201c&#8230; I thought about that word \u2018almost,\u2019 like they almost ran for office&#8230; it made me realize again that time doesn\u2019t last forever. So I have the energy now. I have the time now, and I don\u2019t want my students to have almost what they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2BHAGK3TUFFHXH7ZK2MJ3U7TKY\">She reached out to Richmond County Democratic Party leadership and began pursuing a campaign for the state Senate\u2019s 24th District. She said her interest in the Senate comes from how the body impacts the state budget, and therefore community resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VH3AF2VAUZHSDAEI4GDDQY3MFY\">Rodriguez hasn\u2019t, however, allowed this focus to deter her from learning everything she can about the district and collecting a wide range of connections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KDHLZJIOEJCEDBFPWNUSDQOKII\">\u201cWe have said from the beginning that this will be a campaign of yes, and if anyone invites me anywhere, the answer is yes,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cBut it\u2019s given me a wonderful opportunity to just meet so many different types of Staten Islanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QJLLTVEU6JAIJAAP44SV3SXHIM\">Through this campaigning style, which has led her to attend multicultural festivals, NYPD awards, political rallies, charity fundraisers and motorcycle club meetups, Rodriguez has built her platform on unity and understanding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LYTR3PZTS5CAHL2FQL66D7ROD4\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re red, white, blue, or purple. You still drive on the same streets, you\u2019re still sitting in the same traffic, so there\u2019s a lot of daily living experiences that can be improved upon,\u201d she explained. \u201cThe people come first.
