Americans are facing\u00a0terrible air travel delays<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday after the government shutdown entered its 40th day \u2014 with LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airports among the hardest hit.<\/p>\n

About 5,700 US flights were delayed on Sunday, with 1,857 cancellations,\u00a0according to the FlightAware<\/a>\u00a0online tracking site.<\/p>\n

LaGuardia\u00a0<\/a>led the outgoing delays with 252 flights being rescheduled, about 47% of total flights, the highest percentage in the nation.<\/p>\n

Newark Liberty saw 224 departing flights delayed, more than one-third.<\/p>\n

The average delay at Newark and LGA was about two hours and 15 minutes, the delay at JFK International Airport was 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

All three airports cited\u00a0FAA staffing issues due to the shutdown<\/a>\u00a0as the reason for the delays.<\/p>\n

The delays at Newark come after the\u00a0Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a ground delay due to the staffing shortages \u2014 a problem that has plagued the United Airlines hub since the summer.<\/p>\n

The arrival rate was restricted to about 20 to 34 flights per hour, with the average delay at the airport now hitting 134 minus, according to the FAA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Newark delay order will stay in place until after midnight, but it may remain in place if the staffing levels don\u2019t improve, the agency warned.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, at LaGuardia, the average delays sky-rocketed Sunday afternoon, the FAA added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In terms of sheer numbers, Chicago\u2019s O\u2019Hare International airport saw the largest volume of delays, with 404 flights rescheduled.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sunday marks the third day of the FAA\u2019s air traffic staffing reductions, where the agency has been forced to shed 10% of its workers across 40 high-volume airports due to the government shutdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Air-traffic controllers had already been forced to work without pay since Oct. 1 because of the shutdown, with many having to work side gigs or use up sick days to make ends meet.<\/p>\n

The major delays are expected to continue and will likely cause a\u00a0\u201csubstantial\u201d number of Americans to miss Thanksgiving with their families,\u00a0Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy<\/a>\u00a0warned on Sunday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only going to get worse,\u201d he told CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n
