Casting is now set for The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene’s upcoming\u00a0presentations of\u00a0Di Yam Gazlonim!\u2014a Yiddish adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance\u2014October 25 at 2 PM and 7 PM at Symphony Space.<\/p>\n
The Folksbiene presented the world premiere of Al Grand and Allen Lewis Rickman<\/a>‘s adaptation\u00a0in 2007, and the production was nominated for a\u00a0Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.<\/p>\n The Symphony Space\u00a0cast will be led by Emmy nominee\u00a0Jackie\u00a0Hoffman (Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish) as Rivke (Ruth in the original), Rickman (A Serious Man) as Der Groyser General (Major General),\u00a0Annabel Milisa Parker as Malke (Mabel),\u00a0Drew Seigla as Fayvl (Frederick), MAC winner\u00a0Adam B. Shapiro (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Sargeant of Police,\u00a0and silent film pianist Steve Sterner<\/a> as Groyser Gazlen (Pirate King).<\/p>\n Among the ensemble will be\u00a0Bob Ader,\u00a0Ashley Adler, Kirk Geritano,\u00a0Hannah Goodman, Stephanie Lynne Mason,\u00a0Eli Mayer,\u00a0John Reed, and\u00a0Yelena Shmulenson.<\/p>\n Music director Zalmen Mlotek will\u00a0lead a nine-piece orchestra. Simultaneous supertitles in English will be\u00a0projected on stage.<\/p>\n A reimagining of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan musical, Di Yam Gazlonim!, press notes state, “takes the tale of a dutiful pirate apprentice to new depths, seeing it through the lens of Yiddish culture, and replacing Victorian propriety with exuberant Yiddishkayt.”<\/p>\n Tickets\u00a0are on sale at SymphonySpace.org<\/a>.
