A man known for his kind and warm demeanor was fatally stabbed in the neck at a Bronx shelter<\/a> after enduring months of \u201ctorment\u201d from his alleged killer, according to police and witnesses.<\/p>\n

The victim \u2014 a 48-year-old resident of the shelter identified only as Joey \u2014 was killed Saturday night in the stairwell of a supportive housing shelter on E. 162nd Street, where residents found a horrifying scene of blood spattered across the corridor just before 11:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could see the blood on the stairwell, and, unfortunately, he passed away on the platform of the stairwell,\u201d said 29-year-old Shannon, a resident at the shelter who was friendly with Joey.<\/p>\n

A second victim, 39, suffered lacerations to the arm, cops said.<\/p>\n

Police arrested fellow resident, 33-year-old Tyquan McBride, at the scene and charged him with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD.<\/p>\n

Shelter residents who knew Joey said McBride had<\/a> \u201cterrorized\u201d him for months \u2014 often extorting the \u201cpolite\u201d and \u201ckind\u201d man for whatever small change he earned collecting cans.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe same man that had killed him a few months ago tried to kick in the door to his house. I told Joe to stop hanging out with them,\u201d Shannon said. \u201cYou got some people in here who really have bad mental health, like, cuckoo for Coco Puffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others said McBride was a known problem among residents.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, that\u2019s just the type of guy he is, you can\u2019t tell him no,\u201d said 55-year-old building resident Marcus Brown.<\/p>\n

On the night of the stabbing, shelter residents said they heard Joey running through the halls<\/a> and begging for help while banging on doors \u2014 but before anybody could come to his aid, he had been killed.<\/p>\n

A 911 call was placed, and responding police declared Joey dead on the scene, according to the NYPD.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was always so smiley. Where we live at \u2014 it\u2019s the hood,\u201d Shannon said. \u201cNo one\u2019s really like that. So for him to always be smiley, always say, \u2018Hi, how are you?\u2019 He\u2019d be willing to give you his last item, like his shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like this could have been prevented. If they would have taken more steps, extra steps, you know, it would have did more. They already knew this guy was a problem,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
